Reasons for having kids?

With all this talk about not having kids...I want to know people's reasons for WANTING kids.

Re: Reasons for having kids?

  • I'm bored now that I don't have a wedding to plan

We have too much extra money and nothing to spend it on

    All my friends have them

People will finally stop asking when we're going to have kids

    Maybe it'll save my marriage

I have too much free time and no hobbies

Might want to check out Babies on the Brain instead of Babies NOT on the Brain.

  • tax benefits.

    lowering my student loan payment.

using the backseat of the brand-new SUV that I *had* to have.

but seriously - baby clothes are adorable.

  • It's been forever since I've popped in over here, but I wanted to pop in so this sounds like a fun thread since I have a 14 year old son and an almost 13 year old daughter.  Please note the sarcasm in advance.  :)  I love my children very much, and they are worth all of... this.  LOL

I love ruining my body with stretch marks, or "tiger stripes" as they call them on facebook.

Nothing says romance like total lack of sleep and the parfum d'baby-spit.

I have tons of cash to buy a constant-size-changing wardrobe.

I no longer want to just pick up and go anytime I'd like.  I really would rather plan my grocery store trip like a vacation or find a babysitter.

I am fascinated by non-verbal communication of babies and toddlers.  It's like CSI...figure out why they are crying!

Boy, nothing beats the pre-teen years... I enjoy slamming my head against a brick wall, er, I mean, talking to my teenager about why this is logical.

LOL the list could go on but I'll stop there.  That was fun.

    lol that was funny!!!!!!

  • When I ask my husband if we can hire a maid, I'll now have a much better excuse.

Get to play with Barbie's and Legos all over again.

Experience Disneyworld all over again as a kid.

Make them do funny things and post it on YouTube.

Little hands fit easier in nooks and crannies, so I'll have someone to retrieve lost objects from under the sofa, car seat, etc.

  • I LOVE babies... but on top of that I think it's a good thing you are asking yourself why you do or don't want kids.  But for me I had a great childhood and I want to share that with another person... to give my children all of the things I loved about being a kid and to do the things I wish I had.  I want to watch something we made become a successful adult even though all along the way I will most likely want to shoot myself in the foot!  And I want the chance to show my children I love them and have them feel an absolutely unconditional love...  Oh and a year of no periods!!  after years and years of 10 day periods ill take morning sickness!!

However--- after saying that I'm sure I will miss sleeping in, romance at the drop of a hat, peeing in privacy, taking a long hot shower instead of a short crappy one during nap time, unswollen breasts, fitting into my clothes.... etc. etc. etc!

But if you don't feel like you absolutely want/need to have a baby, then don't!  I have too many friends that got pregnant before they were ready and it sent them into a tail spin missing their young lives.  Maybe spend some time figuring out the reasons you personally would want a baby, and why you dont....

  • Well, if you ask my sister, she'll tell you that she had kids so that she doesn't have to get up/go downstairs/go upstairs to get something.  She can just call one of the kids and say "Go get Mommy's (fill in the blank)" and they fetch it for her just like a well-trained dog.  Funny in a way, but kind of sad.

Our daughter was an "oops" that happened 5 years before the wedding.  I never wanted kids.  He did.  Aside from the tax credit, here are a few of the bonuses associated with having a child:

    * You can decline invitations to places you don't want to go and blame it on the baby.  (Or leave early, claiming the baby is getting fussy.)

    * You can raise your child YOUR way - which means there will be at least 1 person in the world who isn't an incompetent moron with a superiority complex who treats everyone else like garbage.  There are enough d-bags in the world.  You can raise the one non-d-bag in the world.

    * You can go to kids movies and carnivals and such and not look like a pedophile.

    * Sometimes a day of picnics and kite flying and playing dress up can really center you and help you realign your perspective.  It really does do wonders for your sanity.

*I look at my daughter and see half H and half me and I know that even after we're both gone, a piece of our love will live on.  (Corny, I know, but it's true.)

    * Being needed, having someone 100% dependent on your for their survival, can do wonders for your self-esteem, even if you didn't have self-esteem issues to begin with.  Knowing that child is alive and thriving because of YOU is a feeling I can't even describe.
