Getting A Tattoo...

In February I am getting my first tattoo...

I am getting an anchor on my back right shoulder to commemorate my service in the Navy. It will have the scripture Hebrews 6:19.

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."

What are your tattoos and what are the stories behind them?

Re: Getting A Tattoo...

  • This tattoo is for my Grammie who passed away 4 years ago. I saw this when looking in the sky on my way home from her funeral. image

  • I currently have nine, and most of them have stories.

  • I have a purple ribbon in memory of my grandma who passed away from pancreatic cancer. I also have a rubber duck, which is identical to at least twenty of my sorority sisters' who were in my "family."

I have plans for one this spring, which will be for the hubs and SD. It's three parade roses (he bought me a parade rose bush for our first valentines, because "bouquets don't last forever"...) with the line "Alive with the glory of love."

  • I have a star on my lower back, my sister designed it for me when she found out I wanted one. My whole family has tattoos and I got it as a bond between her and I. DH hates it though.

  • When I was 16 years old I got a tattoo while I was on spring break. I got a small tattoo of a daisy. I like daisies, but unfortunately it did not have any meaning what so ever and I thought about it for a total of about 5 minutes before getting it. And, i got it on my butt because I didn't want my parents to see it. Of course they found out about it anyway and I got in big trouble.

In 2005 my 11 month old niece passed away and I wanted to get a tattoo in her honor. I decided to get her initials tattooed down the side of the daisy. What started as a meaningless tattoo now has a lot of meaning.

  • I don't have one. I've always had the rule that I have to like something for a year before I can permanently put it on my body, and I usually "get over" my ideas after around 3 months. But, I'm currently in the process seeing if I "like" an idea for one.

The one that I'm thinking about is an infinity symbol with the words "Love Remains" somehow incorporated into it (Either inside the symbol, or the words connected to it, etc). The words for this song by the same title that my mom and grandma (And I) love the message of, and they're actually carved on my great-grandparents tombstone.

I still have another 6 months to go since I came up with it, which is farther than any other idea I've had has made it with me, so who knows? I might actually be getting my first tattoo next summer :)

I'm more than willing to start validating people's ideas when they start having ideas worth validating

My DH got a ring tattooed on his ring finger (he doesn't like to wear jewelry). At the time the artist said that the underside of your hands and feet do not hold pigment and that any tattoo will not hold. So while he has a ring tattoo on his finger it isn't on the underside of his finger. He had it redone awhile later by a different artist and they confirmed that it would do no good to tattoo the underside.

I'm curious if yours is in some way different?

  • A lot of people in the Navy do Tattooed wedding rings because you can't always wear your real ones. It is to dangerous with our jobs you literally can have your fingers taken off. So most of the time your rings are on a chain around your neck.

I have seen a lot of tattooed wedding rings and have never seen the issue your husband is having. =[

  • Our tattoo artist told H and I the same thing about getting something on the underside of a finger. Chances are much more likely that it would fade very quickly and need touch ups far more often. We went with this instead (the first initial of our last name):

  • I've been wanting a heart tattoo on my side for a while with the words "never forsaken" somehow scrolled into it. I keep putting it off because I don't handle pain well, but my little sis turns 18 in March and she wants me to go with her so we can get tattoos at the same time!
  • I have an outline of a dove with a lavendar awareness ribbon instead of the olive branch. I lost my grandma & uncle to different types of cancer, so the lavendar ribbon is for "general cancer".

  • I've always wanted a tattoo, even had one drawn up but  hate pain/needles so put it off. For my 50th birthday my son set up the appt & pd for it then told me i had the appt. The pain isn't the same as normal pain I can't describe it. But it wasn't as bad as I had always thought it would be. I'm Irish & the one my son got for me is an Irish claddagh w/a green (my favorite color is green) heart underneath it says "Love, Loyalty, & Friendship" on my left shoulder.  my 2nd one I just had done about a mo ago, my husband & I have been together 30 yr's, yr # 29 was a rough one for us & I wondered if we were going to make it. We worked through our problems & talked about renewing our vows as a new beginning, after figuring out who all we'd invite (small get together) if we should have a cook-out/sit down dinner etc....to celebrate I decided we should do something different & less costly instead. I always tell him "He's my Everything" we decided to have matching tattoo's done mine says: "He's my Everything" & his says: "She's my Everything" in an Infinity Loop mine is on my left wrist, his is one his left  inside forearm just below his elbow.
