Open shelving instead of cabinets?

Has anyone taken down kitchen cabinets and put up shelves instead? I have a section of cabinets that I'd like to replace with shelving. The cabinets that are up are screwed into the studs. If I get shelves that take up the same amount of wall space as the cabinets, the brackets wont line up with studs. I would need to get longer shelves if they need to go into the studs. I would prefer that the shelves use the same wall space as the cabinets. How important is it that the shelves be in the studs? TIA.

Re: Open shelving instead of cabinets?

  • Due to the weight of the shelves PLUS the items you'd have on there, I would definitely plan on putting the shelving into studs.

Drywall screws, etc. are only meant to hold up to a certain weight.

Also, if the shelves will hold everyday ite

  • I agree, if you are placing items such as dishes etc. on the shelves they need to be attached to the studs with screws.
  • Just some input from a Kitchen Designer:

Agreed.  It's very important that the screws go into the studs.  Try to find wood or cabinet screws.  Also, make sure your shelves are made of a durable material.  Thinner materia

  • When I wanted to "open up" my kitchen cabinets, I simply took the doors off of the cabinets that would house things that weren't unsightly, like dishes, glasses, etc. For areas that did house unsightly things, like my lower cabinets with my cookie shee

  • Thanks ladies. DH and I took the shelves down tonight and got the area ready to paint for tomorrow. I was pretty sure the brackets would need to go in the studs. I thought the placement would be less than ideal but still much better than having cabinets i

  • I plan to do this and I have several inspiration photos on my Kitchen Redo Pinterest page http://pinterest.com/candi8/kitchen-redo/, and in my blog. Link in sig. I prefer it when the shelves have carved wooden brackets instead of black or silver meta
