And so it begins

24 days into the marriage and Im getting the comments on having a baby. Why why WHY do people feel its necessary to weigh in on such a personal and emotional decision? What if I have infertility issues? UGH I know we all go through this stage in being a newly wed but I really want to punch people in the face!

Re: And so it begins

  • I got a lot of questions about this, and after enough answers of "maybe I never will, but even IF I do it will be a long time from now," people started to take the hint.  I have also learned to just ignore the questions.

  • Like Sessions mentioned, you just have to learnt to ignore it...
  • Most [people suggest having a few key phrases or quips you can say back to people and eventually they stop asking.

Only 1 person so far has asked us and we have been married for 4 months And actually it was my cousin's friend and my cousin said something liek "don't ask them that they want to be newlyweds first!!" so i was happy she chimed in.

No one else has asked me but i tink thats because before they can get onto the topic of babies I mention everything else going on in our lives, DH finishing school, us opening our own business, my work and the recent business trips I have coming up, etcetc.

i think it gives them the hint that we are "too busy"

  • Hahaha! Just the other day I told my DH that my facebook status was going to read, "I dislike violence but the next person who asks me when I'm having a baby is getting punched in the face!" We have been married just under 3 months and I hear it from my sister in law constantly (who is also my boss ugh.) She even said in a toast at our wedding that every night she wishes on a star that we will have triplets and name them Holly, Polly and Molly. Everyone got a good little chuckle about it but I'm pretty sure DH yelled at her after the wedding lol.

  • The whooole family already knows that I don't want kids at all...hubby agreed to marry into it...so they never ask. But...many co-workers always ask that stupid question even though I made it clear to the whole building that I don't want kids...I guess some people just can't take the hint..as obviously as it's been stated.....GRRRR. I just say "never"

  • When I first told my friend that I was getting married, her immediate first instinct was to say, "OOOOH!!!  When are you due??!!!!!!"

    WTF.
  • I've been married just over 6 months and we get that question a lot too.  We're both 30 so people assume we won't wait very long before we start TTC.  I don't think people mean any harm by asking.  Some are probably genuinely curious, others might just be trying to make conversation.  And if it's someone you are fairly close with, they might feel that they have a right to ask.  I'm not saying they do, but I know my friends and I have always talked pretty openly about that so I don't think twice when one of my friends asks me.

Honestly, I get more annoyed by being asked "How's married life?" than I do "When are you going to have kids?"  I know people are just making conversation when they ask "How's married life?" but I never know what to say besides, "It's great!"

Ha, I totally can agree to this.
  • I have the same problem.  We were engaged awhile, but hadn't really set a date until about 4 months before the wedding so people just assumed that I was pregnant.  After I didn't start showing--because I wasn't pregnant Confused-- I started getting quizzed on when I was going to get pregnant.  I am still in school and we are doing serious renovations on the house so why people think I'd want to have a baby when we're so busy is beyond me.  My MIL and mom are both anxious for grandkids so I get it from both sides haha.  I just tell people I'm enjoying having my DH all to myself.  If they get really persistent, I say I like having loud sex with the door open.

  • When my husbands students discovered we were newly married there was at least one question a week about when we were going to have kids. There are only so many ways to say "never".
    Anniversary
  • We've been together for almost 9 years, and married for 5 months. So we are constantly getting this question.

Our newest response has been to look at each other and start laughing and we just say, "we would prefer to keep our sanity for a while." But during the holidays we had the constant, "it's your turn," "your next," or the infamous "you need practice" while handing us a baby (all of my cousins have young children or are expecting). So our response then was, "the plus to this baby not being ours is when it poops, we get to hand it back. We don't want to be the ones people are handing it back to."

We honestly just have fun with it at this point, and we're kind of snarky about it. But we also had people hounding us to get married when we were together for 3 years, and we didn't get married till we were together for 8. So we also enjoy telling them it took us 8 years to get married, we're definitely not rushing the baby thing.

Little do they know that we would like to start trying at our 1 year anniversary.

  • Can I "like" your comment? LOL

This board is awesome! I love it that I'm not the only one around who's annoyed at all the intrusive baby questions? we've been married 2 months (today? didn't realize that till now LOL). Questions started BEFORE the wedding! To those I responded "relax! we decided to do things the 'right' way? first comes love, then comes marriage, and THEN comes the baby carriage?". That always got a good, embarrassed laugh from people, followed by an apology.

Now, when people ask the "when" question, I say "never"? they freak out? I laugh hysterically? they get the point and shut up. I walk away with a big smile on my face? works every time. :-)
