filmy build up on dryer lint screen

We just moved into a new house with and older washer dryer.  I noticed that the dryer lint screen has some filmy build up in it covered with lint that I can't get off with just wiping away the lint.  I'm about it go-to-town scrubbing it with a scrub brush and Dawn...any reason I'm not thinking of that this might not be a good idea.  It looks the the previous users used too much fabric softeners and it built up in there...thoughts? also, while I'm in the mood, any tips on cleaning the inside of a washing machine?

Re: filmy build up on dryer lint screen

  • The film could also be from dryer sheets. We clean our ever time we get new toothbrushes (every couple months) and use the old toothbrushes to scrub the lint screen.
  • We use vinegar for our fabric softener, and there's no buildup. The best thing I can think of to clean the dryer is to get some soapy water and scrub it. Make sure it's completely dry before using again.
