Brown Rice

For those of you who eat brown rice, do you cook it ahead of time? I would really like to start eating more brown rice (instead of just ww pasta all the time) but am always turned off by the long time it takes to cook. Any suggestions?

Re: Brown Rice

  • Our rice cooker has a timer, so I just put it in in the morning, and set it so it will be ready at dinner time.

  • I just make a bunch when I have time and usually it will last 3-4 days.?
  • I put it in the rice cooker in the morning and the rice cooker keeps it warm until I get home from work.

  • We even freeze it and then reheat in the microwave as needed. We put 2 servings into freezer bags.

  • Here is the best thing ever....Rice Expressions Brown Rice (if you google Rice Expressions their webpage will show up.) It is organic brown rice that is pre-cooked, and then frozen. It takes about 3 min. to make a batch and it turns out perfect everytime. It actually tastes really good.  I know that the Kroger I shop at has it in their organic section (the webpage has a store finder and I know my regular grocery store does not show up...so it is not just at speciality stores like Trader Joes.)
  • I buy the steamfresh brown rice in the freezer section.  Walmart has it for $1 a bag and it's good!  microwave it just like the steamfresh veggies for about 5 minutes, it's two servings per bag and it's great!

Bird'seye has a similar product. I think it's called "Steam Fresh." DH buys it at Publix, but I'm sure other grocery stores have it too.

  • I just used the frozen SteamFresh kind last week and it was great! Cooked in a few minutes in the microwave and was perfect in my chicken-and-rice recipe. I'd buy that again in a heartbeat.
