Favorite restaurant (non chain!)

To help get the board moving:

What is your favorite, local, non chain restaurant?  I have a lot.

Pub-I love going to MBC.  The food is incredible.  My only complaint is that their drink list is all beer, which is fine with me, but its always a nogo for my non beer drinking friends.

Sushi-It used to be Maru, every fresh, very unique.  But pricey.  XIAO just opened in Frandor and is just as good and much more reasonable (especially on Saturdays when they have $3 beers and $3 sushi rolls.)

Steak-The best steak I ever had in Lansing was at the Knight Cap.  But again, pricy.  Stillwater is really good too!

Breakfast-?????  I like T&D's Coney Island in Okemos, but this town is in serious need of more breakfast restaurants!

I could name more, but I'll give others a chance too!

Re: Favorite restaurant (non chain!)

  • I love Zeus' in South Lansing. They have Gyros and awesome fries - but it's a "greasy spoon" - not the healthiest, but yummy!

I haven't really been to a lot of local non-chain restaurants, but I really want to try a few. We've looked at Houlihan's and the Tuba Museum - H and I really want to try both!

Been to both!  Houlihans (which is actually a chain) has awesome food.  They have great happy hour specials from 4-7 on their appetizers.

Tuba Museum-I like it. My husband does not.  A lot of their foods are vegetarian and he's a meat and potatoes kind of guy.  Plus its pretty hippy and he doesn't think he's "cool" enough. lol

I KNOW! There are obviously people out there!

  • This is the first time I have stopped by here in forever!

Food.....the best Gyro in town is Lou and Harry's.

I like Beggars Banquet in EL, Dusty's Tap Room in Okemos, Jimmy's Pub in EL, and recently tried Bagger Dave's in EL.

Breakfast....Tony's in EL, Sophia's in Grand Ledge, and Sparty's in Frandor.

How is this?  I go by it and have always wanted to try but the food looked pretty heavy.

  • My favorite topic! Other than the occasional Jimmy Johns or Biggby I don't think I've eaten at a chain in Lansing.

My favorites for breakfast are Sawyer's Pancakes and Soup Spoon Cafe. I also love the soup flight at Soup Spoon for lunch.

The Purple Carrot Truck is great for lunch, but they are on winter hiatus right now. I've tried Red Cedar Cafe a couple of times, and they have a nice soup/sandwich lunch combo.

I go to Sultan's for Lebanese food and Swagath for Indian food. I think Thai Princess in Okemos has the freshest tasting Thai food in town.

Mexican food: The taco truck or Pablo's in Old Town.

My first choice for dinner right now is Fork in the Road. I've not had anything there I didn't like.

If we are going to spend a bit more for a dinner out, we usually go to Soup Spoon, Troppo, or Enso. I've had a nice dinner at Knight Cap as well.

Have you tried their original "restaurant" - Trailer Park'd? Fork in the Road is a "spin-off" of their food truck - which is AMAZING (and obviously closed for winter, unfortunately).

  • Who needs more breakfast places when there is Golden Harvest to be had!  It's on Turner Street in Old Town - a little further north than the majority of the shops - in a more industrial/neighborhood part.  It's delicious goodness.  All locally sourced food with a laid back vibe.

Love Tavern on the Square - they have great small plates.  The Purple Carrot and Trailer Parked are awesome, as mentioned, but closed for the season.  Woody's Oasis is awesome for Middle Eastern Food and the location on Grand River has a great beer selection.  I recently tried What Up Dawg on M.A.C. just north of Albert and it was very good.

  • I think we are lucky that Lansing has so many different kinds of eatries that are not chains to choose from. If I'm in the mood for a steak and can afford it, I always go to Knight Cap or Stillwater Grill. No one else can touch them.

Cancun's Mexican Grill is by far my favorite mexican place in the area(local chain). Always a fun atmosphere and great food!

Lou Harry's have the best gyros around!

Woody's is always a high choice for lunch or dinner, just great quality food that is different from other restuarants in the area. Plus they have the best Spinach Pilo Pie!

I have to say my favorite breakfast place is Fleetwood Diner on S Cedar. I just can't get enough of their Hippie Hash.

I have a slight obession with sweet potato fries so MBC, Zeus's, and Enso have the best ones in the area.

PS I think we should pick some places and meet up for some great food!

  • For breakfast, definitely Golden Harvest! It's quite an event, but usually worth it!
