Cast Iron Stove Grates

My new gas range has two large cast iron grates that each cover half of the cooking area.  I feel like when I wipe them anything I use kind of shreads and leaves pieces behind.  For example, if I used a blue sponge there would be tiny blue specs on the grates when I was done.  What do other people use as cleaner and what kind of cloth to remove grease or cooked on food, etc.?

  • I used to have the same grates (moved, current house is electric, blah). I always just used leftover dishwater and a dish cloth to wipe them down. If something got burnt on, I'd still use dishwater but switch.out the dishcloth for one of those scotchbrite scrubby pads ( the green ones).
  • I'd get a little dish brush and dunk them in dish water and brush them, if possible. As for wiping them down, I'm not sure.

    I've used multiple cloth types and I feel like nothing can withstand the cast iron.


  • I found something on Pinterest that helps.  Place the cast iron grates in either a large Ziploc bag or container with ammonia.  The ammonia doesn't need to be covering the entire grate - the fumes from it are all you'll need.  Seal the bag or container and place it outside on a porch (when I tried this, my bag broke and leaked ammonia on the counter...not fun!).  Wait a few hours, then retrieve the grates from the ammonia - the fumes will make any and all grease/food particles/etc. wipe right off with a clean, damp washrag.
