traveling to alaksa

DH and I are very interested in traveling to Alaska next year.  I posted on the travel board but they are mostly about Alaska cruises.  We would like to fly into Anchorage and drive to Homer and maybe a few other spots.  We are looking at doing something over labor day and going for a little over a week.  Any suggestions are travel advice regarding Alaska?  What to see, what to pack, places to stay, things to watch out for, is this a good time of the year etc?  We are both very outdoorsy and like hiking, fishing, etc.

Re: traveling to alaksa

  • I think the best time of year to go is May or June...If you're lucky, it will be 70 and sunny. The worst it normally gets tha time of year is 50 and rainy - but the rain isn't anything like the rain you see in the lower 48, it's normally what people outside of Alaska would call a drizzle.

If you want to email me at [email protected] I can give you a lot of restaurant recommendations in Anchorage. You can go on a fishing charter out of Seward or Homer, which you may like. There are lots of hikes in the Anchorage area, my favorite would be in Girdwood (45 minutes south of Anchorage) called Winner Creek Trail. It is 2.5 miles back to a gorge that you can pull yourself across in a hand tram. You can turn around and make it a 5 mile trip (it's not so much of a hike on a mountain as it is a trail through the woods...but beautiful) or you can keep going and make it much longer, but I have never done that. You could hike Flattop in South Anchorage, which is fun and provides an awesome view.

You could drive north and see the Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley. If you google Kenai Fjords Tours, that may provide you with some other ideas as well.

Just quickly, here are some great restaurants to try in the Anchorage area:

Moose's Tooth - GREAT pizza, beer, salads

Bear's Tooth - similar/same menu, but they show movies that are out of the theaters and not yet out on DVD for $3 and then you order your food and they bring it to you in the theater.

Glacier Brewhouse - a little more expensive, but by far my favorite restaurant. Good fish, steak, salads, drinks/beer, etc. great desserts!

Simon & Seaforts -also a little pricey, but great seafood.

Orsos - same owners as the Brewhouse, but this is Italian centered. yum!

  • oh my goodness thank you!  i printed off your reply and wrote down your email.  this info is a great start and when we get a little further on in the planning i may email you!  thank you so much!
  • Hey, I live in Chugiak, about 15 minutes north of anchorage. I also grew up in Homer! You can go halibut fishing in Homer, also go to Halibut Cove, you can take a boat over there its called a dinner cruise

okay, so i guess the rest will be in green too:) hahah~! The train to seward is another nice idea, my fiance works for them and I love doing that! There are tons of glaciers and switch backs where you can see the end/front of the train.

Like PP said, Mooses tooth ROCKS, but if you want to go to an old movie at the same time, Bears Tooth, my cousin always calls it Mooses Hoof ( or something other body parts that she can think of.) Also if you go to homer, you HAVE to eat at Fat Olive! BEST pizza this side of NY!!!

Hatchers pass ( O look at that, its black again) Its in Wasilla, there are old mines. and Lots of hiking!!

if you need anything else email me at [email protected]

  • Thank you girls so much!  If I need anything else, I will definitely be in touch.
