Nine things stay at home moms never want to hear again.

1. What do you do with all your free time?

2. If you're tired, why don't you nap when your kid does?

3. It must be nice to not have to work.

4. Your husband must do really well, I could never afford to stay at home.

5. When do you plan to return to your career?

6. Don't you feel like getting a master's degree was a waste of money?

7. You'll never read a book again. Or Travel. Or Shower.

8. I'd die without adult conversation.

9. Does your husband give you allowance from his paycheck?

  • I think I've heard just about all of these. Drives me nuts.

  • A big fat AMEN to numbers 4 and 6.  Here comes a nice little vent.

I can't even tell you how many times people have said things to me like, "wow, they must pay teachers a lot more in your district than mine..." or, "you guys must be living paycheck to paycheck/ have an absolute ton of credit card debt," or "how in the world do you make it work on your DH's income?"  I know people aren't always purposely trying to be nosy, but it's not appropriate.  I get that people are smart enough to realize there is probably more to the story based on simple observation, but it's my belief that personal finances are just that-- personal.  I would never dare ask someone how they afford so many vacations, make their mortgage, afford their vehicles, etc., but I suppose others feel differently than I about the appropriateness of that line of questioning.

And on #6, I don't think any type of education is a waste.

Same here! I have even heard some of this from my own husband...men are clueless sometimes.

DH is totally guilty of "it must be nice not to have to go to work!" and my ILs have made comments asking why Im still in school if Im just going to be a stay at home mom. Not that their opinion matters, but sahm or not, I think education is important.

  • I agree that most of these are annoying, but I actually sometimes think #6 to myself... just because I have major debt from that degree and I'm not even using it. If I hadn't gotten that degree, I'd owe significantly less in student loans and could probably stay home longer.
