Aussie Wireless service

Hi Aussie ladies,

Should I purchase a phone here in the US and get it configured there? What type of phones are popular there. Data plans normal? Just trying to find a way to stay to way to stay in touch with my family in the states as much as possible. TIA!

  • I forget - are you moving here? Or just vacationing? If you are just vacationing you could probably go with a US phone depending on who your provider is. Check with your current mobile phone provider and ask them about it. That's what I did when I visited here 4 years ago.It was a little expensive but the simplest way to do it.

Now if you are moving here, you won't want to do that. You'll want to set something up when you get here. I know that if you have a Verizon phone you can not get it set up from here at all - they are locked down tight.

  • Thanks! We are moving there and currently have Verizon :) I was just told that phones are sooo expensive there.

  • I had a Verizon Blackberry Curve when I moved here. Can't use it here. It sucks. Cost really depends on what kind of phone you want.

I have a Virgin prepaid smart phone that I only paid $79 for here, so it's not all that bad. I'm using a $19/cap plan which suits my needs because I don't use it that much except to communicate with my DH who is also on Virgin.

You are better off using Skype to keep in touch with family/friends in the States though.

  • I agree with Bluegirl.  For international calls (and long distance calls) we use Skype.

The phones themselves aren't too expensive, but the usage is.  For example, with Telstra, for my "free VM" it costs me $.30 to  connect to the message bank and then $.30 per minute (billed in minute increments).  Oh and we just found out you can't lengthen the amount of rings before the call goes to msgs.

Right now I think I have over 60 VMs because I won't pay to check my "free" VM.

  • And you will need 100 points of documentation to sign up for a plan.  You'll also need these points for bank accounts, etc.

  • Getting a phone here was harder than getting a license actully! It was the 100 point thing, they only wanted Aussie ID and stuff. I had to go back 3 times before I got one! Anyway, the plans are a bit different than the US. You get a certain amount of "credit" not the "minutes" I was used to in the states (they don't do the free nights and weekends thing). I am on a $59 cap and I get a certain amount of credit (maybe it's like $600 or something). I have no idea how much each minute or text costs but I have not had any problem going over my cap or anything. I mostly text but do certainly make some calls and my bill is fine. With the $59 dollar cap I got an iPhone for free (2 yr contract). This is the 3rd phone I have had here and I never paid anything extra for the phone besides my contract. Oh, and I definitely just Skype and FaceTime with my family/friends in the US so I don't know how much that would cost either.

I am with Telstra and you can ask them to turn the VM off.

I am on a $39.75 plan with Telstra for an iphone. The phone costs are written in to the contract and it costs $3 per month. The contract entitles me to $350 worth of calls/text per month and 2gb of data. I am a light user as I have a work mobile as well and tend to use that during the day or to call home at night if I am working late. We mostly use my cap for calling hubbys parents in QLD as it is cheaper to call mobile to mobile than landline to landline.

How long have you been on your plan?!  This is what I was finding at Telstra

And of course I have to get a new phone because the unlocked phone I got in Europe less than two years ago is only a 2G and I need 3G at minimum to get decent service where I live.
