"God Bless You."

There is a guy in the office - he works in a finished retail division. He failed miserably and cost this company millions of dollars and many, many jobs. Of course he can't take all the blame. The CEO signed off on all his expenses.

Anyway, I digress. He is now doing the Customer Service since the remainder of the department was laid off. He says, "God Bless You" multiple times a day to various customers.

Really? Way to potentially lose a customer that could take offense to that.

Maybe it's just my disdain for him that is talking.

Re: "God Bless You."

  • I thought this was going to be about sneezing.  Mostly because that is the only situation in which this is (sort of) acceptable.

Do you have a lot of customers in the South or something?

  • That's really not a good idea -

it's a pretty quick way to lose a customer.

Depending on who said it - I would totally side eye someone who said that to me in  CS situation. (If it's a sweet old lady I'd probably attribute it to how she was raised)

  • I am all about sharing your faith on your own time if you are comfortable with it. But when you are working for a company, you are representing the company. Especially when you are trying to make a sale, you should keep that to yourself unless the customer has stated that they have the same beliefs.

Nope, but come to think of it, he's from Florida.

  • Yeah, I agree he shouldn't say that on the phone to customers.  Just by saying that, as a representative of the company, he could be scewing people's opinions into thinking that it's a Christian based company, and that can affect the clientele.

That being said, I'm never really bothered when people say that to me.  If they're a Christian, they believe they're giving a me a compliment, so I just take it as one.  Of course, I live in Kansas.  Around here, people say God Bless You in place of Thank You.  You get pretty used to it after awhile.

  • I find the appropriate response to this sort of thing to be, "May the Flying Spaghetti Monster be with you!"

To be fair, I didn't come up with that.  Liz was referring to a "real" religious choice.  See the link below:

ETA: I'm going to make this it's own post if anyone is interested.
