Introductions

Tonight my boyfriend is brining his 2 year old chocolate lab (male, in tact) over for the first time. I have a spayed 2 year old leb/beagle mix. Any tips on introducing them? They're both very friendly. I just want to make sure things go as smoothly as possible.

Re: Introductions

  • Go for a walk first so they meet on neutral ground. Have one walk in front so there can be some butt sniffing and then switch. This is better than face to face greetings.

At least this is how we do it at the shelter and it almost always works :o

ETA: also, I would pick up all toys and food in the house so when they are in there together, there's nothing to argue over. :o

  • If they've never met before, introduce them outside your place on neutral ground (like the sidewalk, for example). Do they both do well meeting new dogs when they're on walks/on leash? Just take it slow, let them see each other, then get close enough for them to sniff if they're both looking cool with the situation.

Any reason your BF hasn't neutered his dog yet? I understand waiting in larger male dogs to give them a chance to mature, but I'd say at 2 he's at a good age to go ahead and lop off those danglers!

Good catch! I totally missed that. Tell your BF to get with the program and reduce his dog's risk of cancer :o
