Need Advice re: 2 male dogs

Hi,  I need your advice.  We have 3 dogs (1 female and 2 males), but only the 2 male dogs are becoming a problem.  The Bull Terrier (BT) is 3.5 yo and the Jack Russell (JR) is 1 year and a few months. They used to get along great, but recently the BT is becoming extremely jealous and keeps attacking the JR.  It is usually unprovoked by the JR, but the JR will not back down once the BT starts fighting. When I say unprovoked I mean the JR hasn't done anything to the BT except for show affection towards me.  They haven't injured each other yet, but I am afraid it will happen. I literally have to jump in and pull them off of each other. This doesn't happen when DH is home. It's only something that occurs with me and it's usually over some display of jealousy for my attention. They are both fixed if that matters. What do I do?

Re: Need Advice re: 2 male dogs

  • It sounds like the bull terrier is resource guarding -- and his resource is you.

There is a short booklet called "Mine!" by Jean Donaldson that offers some advice that can help but I'd also recommend calling a behaviorist.

  • It could be resource guarding on the part of the BT (that resource being you/your affection).

I don't have experience, but I'd recommend contacting a behaviorist (not just a trainer), who would better be able to point out the behaviors each dog is displaying and what you can do to correct it.

ETA: Just saw I basically repeated RHB word-for-word on the first part! LOL!
