I'm panicking now...update-now I'm pissed off.

KR's 9-month appointment was not with his pediatrician. He was at a medical conference. The guy that he saw was a GP. He tried to sell us his house in South Carolina...really.

Anyway I discussed a situation that I was seeing with KR's eye.

Do you see how his right eyelid is a bit droopy compared to his left?

The doctor said "Oh, that's Ptosis, I wouldn't have noticed it if you haven't said anything...I think we just leave it alone, but let me check"

He left the room and said "yep, mention it to Dr. Pediatrician at your next appointment (in March). See ya!"

I was just doing research and everything says that it should be treated immediately because it could cause vision problems later in life.

Do I take him back in to see the pediatrician? Or do I believe the GP? I've worked myself up in a panic...

***Update! ***

Doctor called back-Pedi still not back so talked to the nurse of the GP that saw us a couple weeks ago. Was dismissed and told to re-evaluate at 1 year well check, he thought it would clear up on it's own. (Even though I noticed it since he was about 3 months old...I just kept forgetting to mention it to pedi.)

I had my cousin talk to her eye doc. friend-said that it could cause a lazy eye or amblyopia (in worse case senerio, which I don't think we're dealing with) but it will have to be corrected with surgery...So I called the pediatric eye doc...nothing available to book until March, unless I drive 1.5 hours away.

I'm so frustrated...what do I do?

  • If you're concerned, definitely take him back to the pedi. You can never be to careful when it comes to these things and doctors can be wrong too.

  • Do you have an email address for your pediatrician?  If you do I would email them this picture and see what they say.

If you can't email them I would call and ask to speak to your pediatrician and see what they want you to do.

If you are going to worry about it all the time until March I would go see the doc just for ease of mind.

  • I would call your pedi when he gets back... see what they say about coming in immediately or not. In fact, I'd just make an appt just to be on the safe side... March is a long way off.... better to be safe than sorry in my opinion (but I have absolutely no knowledge about that particular condition).
  • Thanks guys, I just didn't want to be the mom that was like, "Well, I was doing research on this on WebMD therefore, I'm a doctor..."

But screw it, even my Pedi said "If you think something is wrong, call"

I called, so now I'm waiting for a call back from the office.

  • I agree, if you are concerned, make a closer appointment with your pedi... I have a friend who just recently had to nag her GP to know end to get a referral to a pedi because she suspected scoliosis in her 3 month old daughter. The doctor said not to worry about it and she persisted, and it turns out that she was right, and that LO needs surgery next month :(

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that it isn't something serious, and that it can be corrected easily!!

  • My thought is to just say "I would like a call back from my child's pedi. When will he be back in the office?" nurses can be a great resource, however, they are not a pedi, plain and simple. I have had issues with the nurses at our pedi dismissing my concerns about A not feeling well and then we wind up dealing with a far more extensive illness than we would have if they had given my concern credit.

I would wait to talk to your pedi until he is back in the office since it sounds like this is something that has been ongoing for a little bit. I'm not surprised that the pedi eye dr doesn't have time for a non-referral patient until march. Also, insurance may not cover the appt unless you have a referral from lo's pedi. A referral from your pedi will probably help to get you in sooner if an eye dr visit is warranted.

    Good luck!

  • Thats the thing, it wasn't even my pedi's nurse, it was the nurse of the GP. Which I'm fine and dandy with, and maybe if it the peds nurse I'd be okay with it.

The reason the pedi eye doctor is booked til March is because he only comes to town once a month.

I ended up calling and booking an appointment in the town 1.5 hours away. I figure if it's no big deal-awesome, I "over mommed it", but at least my worries will be gone. Then I also wouldn't be potentially faced with "Why didn't you come in sooner?"
