WIJFR - HG Trilogy (SPOILERS)

So I just finished Mockingjay this afternoon. For what it's worth, here are my thoughts...

I think the author does a great job of presenting questions about authority, power, government, individual responsibility, and violence. Of the 3 books, I thought HG was the best overall story, CF was ok (mostly because so much of it was transitional) and MJ went back to being amazing. My biggest pet peeve was that by the end of MJ there were SO many characters it started to get overwhelming and I felt less connected to the action. But I was definitely on team Peeta, so I was quite happy with the ending.

1. I don't understand why Finnick had to die. I wasn't happy that Prim died, but I totally understood why it had to happen. Finnick just seemed to be one more dead person and she never really finished the story with Annie.

2. I was SHOCKED that Katniss voted in favor of another round of HGs with the capitol's children. I was especially shocked that this never became an issue between her and Peeta, and then nothing actually ever came of it in the book.

3. I did not love the narrator (I listened to the final 2 books on audio) - she sounded too old for a 17 year old Katniss. And I think that Katniss' age, and the fact that this was to a certain extent a coming of age story, was too important to the books to be mixed up like this.

Otherwise, all amazing.

Re: WIJFR - HG Trilogy (SPOILERS)

  • I haven't heard the audio, but here are my thoughts on the rest:

    1) I think Finnick's death made the book realistic.  In a war, people die in the middle of their "stories" for no reason other than that war is terrible and takes unfinished lives.  So for me, while there wasn't necessarily a plot-driven reason for Finnick to die, the senseless loss of life was a point that the author was trying to make.

    2) Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the reason Katniss voted for another round of the HG was to give herself the opportunity to assassinate Coin.  She saw where Coin was headed and knew she had to stop her and that was her only way to do so.  I would assume Peeta understood, after she killed Coin, what she had been doing and that was why it wasn't addressed between them.

  • Glad you liked the series!

Re: #2: I was not shocked that Katniss voted in favor of another round of HG's for Capitol children. She is essentially someone who will always look out for herself and those she deems she "needs" to watch over. She is definitely a character with more flaws than most heroines are usually written with. That was just my take.

I get this. My feeling was mainly that there was so much death, Finick's just kind of got lost in the bloodbath. That could have been the point, that so many people die, the individual deaths just become meaningless. But I think that point was made with others like Boggs, etc.

Maybe it was just my listening skills, but it seemed like her vote in favor of another HG was followed by her ranting about the loss of life and the preciousness of children. I understand her ranting and I appreciated that she experienced serious psychological trauma and didn't know what to think or what she was thinking half the time. It was just such a glaring inconsistency when I listened to it, and I thought for sure Peeta would call her out on it.

  • She didn't vote for another HG because she wanted another HG. She voted as a way to earn Coin's trust so she could later assinate Coin. That's why, when she votes, she says it's for Prim, and when Haymitch agrees, he says he's with the Mockingjay. She does not want more children to die, she wants Coin to die.

  • Ditto Y_L and Julie.

The fact that Finnick's death felt that way - "unecessary" in terms of the story - was exactly the point.

And the fact that it felt rushed and left things unfinished with Annie, who we cared about as a character. That was the point. War sucks balls. It leaves stories unfinished and lovers heartbroken and children with no parents and people die for stupid reasons (look at Pat Tillman) with no explanation. Not every death that happns in a war serves a greater story.

So if she had voted against another games Coin would have taken it personally? This was to guarantee that she would get to kill Snow. Aha. There goes the light bulb in my head.

Yes, yes, this too. It has been about a year since I read the series so I was a bit fuzzy there on the finer points. Or I will just blame it on my SFFB. (Sh!t For Brains, as my mother calls it, I am sure you can guess what the extra F I throw in there is for. ;)

  • I was bothered by Finnick's death too but I liked that Collins was able to put me in that position to be mad at her because it meant she did her job in making me connect with the character.  Such a great trilogy!

Yes. Coin already saw her as a big threat, so Katniss wanted to score some points, so to speak.

I hear what y'all are saying about Finnick, but I dunno. I still thought the carnage in MJ was over the top / heavyhanded (yeah, war sucks. we get it.). I also thought Gale kinda got screwed -- he just goes off to 2 for some fancy job, and that's it?

He left for 2 because he knew things with him and Katniss could never be the same. He basically helped design the trap that got Prim killed. Even if it was the Capitol, not 13, that actually did it, there would always be that question between him and Katniss.
