Christmas poll

There was a Christmas poll on my Bump board and I thought it might be a good way to get some action here too.

1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?

2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)

3. What other decor do you put up around the house?

4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has?

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?

Re: Christmas poll

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? For now & until the LL is at least a few years old, we'll do fake...once he/she will start having memories of going to find a tree, we'll probably start real.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)   We have 3 trees - each a different size. The main one in the living room has all of our important ornament with red wooden beads for garland and a light-up bow on top.  In the kitchen, we have a white tree with blue lights and all of our Penn State ornaments.  In our bedroom, we have a small tree with ornaments we couldn't fit on the living room one.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Lots...too much in my opinion, but I get just about no say in Christmas decorating.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? not really.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?  Just figured it out, I think.  5th grade, but kept pretending another year because I was afraid I wouldn't get gifts..lol

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? We do fake. The dog and cats eat real and throw up pine needles,  we learned fast!

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) We used to do strictly red, green, white and silver. This year since half of the lights on the tree were burnt out, I replaced them with all the colors and ornaments are no holds barred now.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We do stockings, and kitchen and bathroom towels and wreaths.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has?  Nope

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I was probably about 7. My mom had me carry a bunch of Toys R Us bags upstairs which I thought nothing of until I woke up sick in the middle of the night, walked towards the living room to see if anyone was awake and puked on the floor. Then I looked up and there she was wrapping all kinds of presents and eating a cookie. lol

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?  We have a fake one.  Last year though one of my students brought in a real tree and it made me miss having a real one like we did when we were kids.  The smell is unbeatable.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)  Our fake tree has white lights attached to it (which is so nice not to have to string the lights every year).  We buy Christmas ornaments from each place we travel to so it's a fun trip down memory lane when we decorate the tree.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house?  I love Christmas so I go all out.  Our fireplace mantle and the nook above is decorated.  I used to collect snow globes when I was a kid, so those are everywhere.  I have the christmas tea towels, and serving dishes and all that kind of fun stuff.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? When we were kids we always went to my Grandma's with all my Aunts and Uncles and Cousins on Christmas Eve and did a big Turkey dinner and opened gifts then went to Church.  I hope we can start something like that now that we have Mackenzie, but it's more difficult because we live far away from both our parents.  Last year Brice and I went skating on Christmas Day, so I think we might try to continue to do that every year (weather permitting).  We also used to always get new pyjamas on Christmas eve, so I'd like to do that with our kids when they get older.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I don't remember some big revelation.  I think I was pretty old though and then just sort of figured it out.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?  I've had a fake tree my whole life (my brother is allergic to the real thing), now it feels like having the fake tree IS the tradition.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Almost all of our ornaments have personal significance.  I started out with the ornaments from my childhood tree (my parents pretty much stopped decorating when I moved out) and now we've collected more throughout the years.  Everyone has certain ornaments that are "theirs" to hang (I still have my baby's first Christmas ornament, etc).  Decorating our tree always gives me the warm fuzzies as we take out and discuss each ornament.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We have stockings, a few other things, and lights outside.  Other than the tree, we don't go too crazy.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? Every year on Christmas Eve we all get brand new pajamas.  I love spending x-mas morning in cozy pajamas sipping coffee and watching Will open presents.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I was 6 and apparently asking too many questions.  My dad decided it was time to come clean because they were having to lie too elaborately.  It wasn't until months later that it dawned on me that if Santa wasn't real then that meant the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny probably weren't either.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? We have a small fake one for our apartment. I've never had a real tree.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) I have ornaments from my childhood. I know where every single one came from. My grandmother used to give me a new ornament every year. I've continued that by buying one new one a year. Eventually, I'd like to have 2 trees... one "show" tree decorated in silver and white and a "family" tree with all the ornaments that have sentimental value.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Candles, a few knickknacks to replace other decor, some minor garland.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? Christmas Eve with my mom's cousin, Christmas morning with my dad, then amazing breakfast and baked apples, Christmas afternoon with my grandparents, followed by yummy dinner, Christmas evening with M's family.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? 3rd grade I think. I just kinda figured it out. I mean, a man down a chimney? Really?

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Fake currently, but once we are no longer in an apartment we plan on getting a real tree.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) We use small white lights and all of our ornaments are sparkly balls of all colors. We have a star burst sparkly star on the top of the tree.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We have a real wreath on the door, I have real greenery around the mantel and other places. My table runner and place mats plus we get the holiday dishes out. I have different decorations that go on the shelves during Christmas and we have our nativity out.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? On Christmas Eve we always eat dinner w/ family. Then we open presents from each other before we go to the candle light service at church. On Christmas morning we aren't allowed to do anything until everyone is up and we open our stockings . We then take turn opening Santa presents. For breakfast we have Jesus Birthday Cake that we make on Christmas Eve. Christmas we spend in our jammies just having family time. There are others but those are the main things.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I was 4. My parents said I never really believed them and when I was 4 I told them that they were Santa and that was the end of it. However, my siblings came when I was 5 & 6 and I loved playing along w/ my parents and my siblings didn't find out until they were much older than I was.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Always Real. Until last year we always cut one down ourselves.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Colored lights, all our ornaments have meaning-1/2 are from S's grandmother and are 30+ years old, the other 1/2 are ones we have been given by my parents or have given to each other. Every one has a story.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Not much. Some white lights out front, a real wreath on the door, stockings and that's about it.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? The child gets 1 present and a book Christmas Eve, On Christmas day it's stockings (everything is wrapped in our stockings), breakfast, presents-we open 1 thing at a time and go around the room. It takes forever, but totally worth it. Also, breakfast includes plettar-Swedish Pancakes-made on my great grandmother's pan with her recipe.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I knew he wasn't for a while, probably from about 7 on, but presents stopped coming the year my grandmother died, so I was 10, because my faily was just too overwhelmed at the holidays to get "Santa" together. It was a huge change for us after she was gone.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?

    Fake,  Ryan's highly allergic...to everything.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)

    white lights-purple ornaments this year.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house?

We decorate the mantle in a traditional fashion, stockings, garland, etc.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has?

We are going to do a Christmas book advent. We open all the presents under the tree on Christmas Eve, then Santa comes. We have tacos on Christmas eve too.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?

I was 5, my mom took me out to lunch and after we were going to meet Santa. My mom told me because my sisters were being VERY obvious about it. I was heartbroken, and I decided I didn't want to see him any more..

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Fake, we always had a fake one growing up and we have a smaller fake one now from when I was single and lived alone.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Colored lights, and random ornaments, most a cheap colored balls, but we have a few that we've collected from various places or that we're given to us that have meaning. One day I'd love to have my grandmother's ornaments from my mom.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Stocking on the mantle, little knick knacks around the house on the mantle, walls, etc., wreath on door, Christmas hand towels in the bathroom and dishcloths in the kitchen, table cloth, tree centerpiece thing on the dining room table, small table runner on the coffee table, and sometimes a few strands of lights outside.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? Growing up we always went to one side of the family Christmas Eve, and the other side Christmas Day, and we got to open one present on Christmas Eve and it was usually pjs. That changed after one set of grandparents moved away and on the other side my grandmother passed. So then it was usually my grandparents would come down and we'd have Christmas just with my dad's side and get together with my aunts and uncles and cousins. Now they all still have big family Christmases, sometimes with the traditional pork or sometimes with ham. T and I are now trying to make our own traditions and this year will be the first I spend with his family.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I think I suspected for quite some time, because I always used to peek in my parents' closet and saw all the gifts, but when my grandmother died when I was 9 my parents said that Christmas was going to be leaner that year since Nana was Santa and used to buy all the gifts.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? One of each. A fake one in the front of the house in the dining room and a real one in the family room.

     2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)  Dining room: nothing but colored lights. Family room: white lights, colored bulbs and our collection of ornaments

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We have a really big staircase that is in our main living area and the loft. We wrap white lights around it. We have white lights and a wreath outside. We have christmas linens in the bathrooms and christmas glassware along with other random decor.

     4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? I always decorate a gingerbread house...and eat most of the gingerbread in the process.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?  I don't think there was a specific time. However, there was one year my younger sister wrote a letter to Santa declaring that he had to give us proof that he exists. "Santa" wrote us a letter back and left big dirty soot prints on the white carpet in front of the fireplace on accident.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?

Fake, had a real one most of my childhood though so I may decide to go that route when Brin is a bit older

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) colored lights always I love red so there is a lot of red on the tree

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Rich has a bunch of christmas music boxes that he was given every year as a child so we put those out

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has?

We used to get pjs on xmas eve. My mom hands out gifts and we open one at a time so we can watch everyone open their gifts.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?

    Second grade I think

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree?

Fake for a couple reasons... One, in BC where I grew up the trees are nice and full, here they're tall and gangly, so getting a real tree is not as nice as it used to be. Also, if Wyatt decides to go 'logging' I don't want the tree to come down and hurt him.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)

We have mostly brown/green ornaments (white lights), and every year we add a new one in to represent our year. (2008 was an angel for my dad, 2009 was wedding bells, 2010 was baby's first Christmas, and this year we got one while in AZ)

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house?

I'm not sure what I'm going to do... obviously anything down low is going to have to be put up higher. I like to have a nativity scene in the living room, but I won't be able to with Wyatt around. We bought a little people nativity set that we'll use instead.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has?

I used to decorate on the 3rd because it is the day my Dad passed away, but now I'm going to wait until after Wyatt's birthday, so to make sure they stay separate for him. Lance's family always has Christmas on Christmas eve, and then we float to whomever invites us on Christmas Day lol.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?

I don't think I can remember a time when I actually believed in Santa Clause... I was bounced around in foster care for quite a few years between the ages of 4 and 8, so I'm assuming someone let me know somewhere in there.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Always real

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) We use white lights and matching gold and red ornaments. I am already considering a small fake table top tree for handmade ornaments from SILs and future children.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house?  TONS. Most of my regular decor comes down and christmas stuff goes up - snow globes, snowmen, santas, nativity sets, stuffed animals, I have four boxes of christmas decorations.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? My mom gets us all pajamas and we open them on Christmas eve to wear on Christmas day, which David and I also do for ourselves and will do for our kids. I make cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. In David's family, "Santa" puts out candy canes all over their tree when he comes.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I just grew up and realized it wasn't possible. We still played along for a long time because my brother is 9 years younger than me. I do remember being 12 years old and my best friend and I had a conversation about how we knew things like Santa and the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny weren't possible, but we made a promise to each other to still believe. So sweet now when I think back on it.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Fake. My mom was always allergic to them growing up so that is what we had. It is our normal, so that is what we always do.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Colored lights, red green and silver round ornaments and then some of our own ornaments (lots of Disney as you can imagine)

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Oh man. We have a billion Christmas stuffed disney things that we put up. Maggie plays with them now, so they don't sit nicely where I put them anymore. We have garland that we put up on the trim that separates the living room and dining room, we have stockings, a wreathe on our front door and our outside is a little crazy :)

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? When we open gifts with  my family it is always one at a time and we all watch. Like PP said, it takes forever, but I love it. I never realized how much I loved this until I started opening gifts with my IL. They separate them in piles and everyone goes to town. I feel like I don't see what everyone gets and sometimes it is less appreciated. I want to start a new tradition with Matt and Maggie, but I haven't figured out what yet.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? Wait... Santa isn't real? :) I think I just figured it out one day. My sister is 5 years younger so I had to play along for quite some time. I didn't mind though :)

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Always fake

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights)   We have silver garland and a silver bow for the topper with white lights. We use a bunch of our ornaments from growing up. There really isn't a specific theme.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We decorate with lights and garland outside. Lots of little decorations like our stockings and some snowmen throughout the house.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? Not really.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?  2nd grade. We had pen pals with a 4th grade class and my pen pal told me. Real nice.

    1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Real.  We've always had real growin up.  E had I went through a couple of years with a fake tree and it just didn't feel the same.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) 2 strands of red, 2 strands of white lights.  Red and silver ornaments.  Some other ornaments we've collected throughout the years.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We do stockings, some christmas breakable decorations, lights outside, table decorations.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? None too big.  We try to get together on Christmas Eve and have some sort of game night.  Last year it was at our house and I'm thinking we are going to have it here again.  We eat dinner together and swap presents between our families..me, my sister and brother.  On Christmas we visit my Grandparents house and swap with other family members and then visit E's familyat their house.  My Sister cooks some sort of dinner.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I don't really remember how I found out Santa wasn't real.  My Sister always says "if you keep believing, he is still real" and I go by that saying.  Christmas is my all time most favorite holiday of the year and it brings so much happiness and joy to me.  I'm so happy to be adding an addition to our family around Christmas time-it will only make things that much more exciting.

    Such a big boy!
  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? We've always rocked a fake one because we're not usually home for the holiday. I'm hoping for real next year.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Colored lights and our ornaments. We have no theme, it's just all stuff we love.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? Lots of green garland strings around, lights out front and candles in the windows.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? My family does a big Christmas party the weekend before and all of the adults exchange cookies. It's fab. Mark's family gets together Chrismtas Eve for a big Italian feast and then we all go to midnight mass.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? This is going to sound super lame, but 4th grade. The teacher said something about it. I'd thought so before, but that confirmed it. We were a very on-a-budget family growing up and my parents always managed to do tons of awesome Santa presents. I think they were able to keep it going so long because I never thought they could afford all of that stuff.

  • 1. We have a fake tree. DH wants to buy a new one thia year because our current one is my parent's old one and he would like one that just folds out and spreads out on it's own.

    2. I only have one set of ornaments and they're mostly gold. I also have a bunch of unique ornaments.

    3. I have a wreath on my front door (the only thing I've put up this year so far). I put a couple strands of Christmas lights around somewhere.

    4. Not really.

    5. I never believed in Santa Claus. My family didn't do the gift giving thing until recently.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Fake

    2. How do you decorate it? Red and silver balls with white lights. Boring,  I know, thisyear we will add Darien's first christmas ornaments too. my parents tree was always so full and cluttered looking so when I got my own I said it would stay simple until there were children to decorate it

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? might put out a few snowmen

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? We play Mexican Train on Christmas Eve, its a domino game.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen?  I think I made it until 5th grade.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? we have a fake, pre-lit one.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) see my pictures on FB lol... It's a bunch of random sentimental ornaments and Star Trek with a little star on top.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? lots of evergreen scented candles in hurricane glass with ornaments, wreaths, wooden shoes by the door, stockings hung in the doorway, and a holiday village on the end tables and book shelves.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? We have a pickle ornament that Steve hides in the tree and I can't open my present on Christmas day until I find it. We also eat cake after dinner on Christmas and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I was in middle school (not sure exactly what year) and on Christmas day I checked the note I had left Santa for a reply from the elves (something that had happened every year that I could remember) and they hadn't written anything. At that point I started thinking of Santa as more of an idea than an actual person.

  • 1. Do you get a real or fake Christmas tree? Real! We go every year with my family, and buy a tree for their house, and one for ours.

    2. How do you decorate it? (certain color scheme, random ornaments, white lights/colored lights) Colored lights, random ornaments from our childhoods, or that we've accumulated since we've been together.

    3. What other decor do you put up around the house? We have stockings up, a little village, other random knick-knacks, and lighted garland on our stair railing. Outside, we do a real wreath on the door, more lighted garland on the railings and around the door.

    4. Any special Christmas Traditions that your family has? We have basic traditions about who we spend which days with. We celebrate with our own parents/siblings, and the extended family on both of my parents' sides on different days. I love everything about Christmas time, it's my absolute favorite time of the year!

5.How old were you when you "learned" that Santa Clause was not real and how did it happen? I had "known" for a while, but it was really confirmed when I was in 4th grade. I was at my grandmother's house, reading a letter, and one of her siblings had written, "As always, Jimmy will play Santa for the kids". My cousin and I read it, and that's when I knew for SURE. Like others, I have 2 younger siblings, so I still pretended to believe for a long time.
