Newbie to GL and a Laundry Question

Hi! Im a more frequent poster on my local board but Ive just started popping onto GL for some ideas of how to green my life a little more.Ill probably be posting here and there so I thought Id introduce myself. Generally, Im a yankee suburbanite trying to tweak my lifestyle to reduce my carbon footprint, ingest less chemicals, save money where I can and save a little thriving corner of the world for my daughter while Im at it. Like some other posters, DH is only half on board so every change takes a little while at our house, but we're slowly making progress.

I read recently on this board about using vinegar as a laundry fabric softener and Id like to try it....should I put it in the fabric softener dispenser "hole" in my washer or the bleach one or does it not matter? Also, I use oxyclean in every load so is that kosher with vinegar as well? Thanks!

Re: Newbie to GL and a Laundry Question

  • Hi and welcome!

I have a FL washer and put it in the fabric softener section, but occasionally i also put it in the bleach section as well.  I also use oxyclean some loads and put that in the same section as the detergent.  A lot of people with top load washers use a fabric softener ball for dispensing the vinegar.

  • Well hello fellow Philly Nestie!

I pour the vinegar directly into the fabric softener hole.  I also find that when using the vinegar, I don't need to use a dryer sheet.  This may change when winter comes so stand by...

I make my own laundry detergent but mix oxygen bleach in with the other ingredients and I have had no problems.

This would be great bc I was considering a dryer ball instead of dryer sheets but our laundry is right next to our bedrooms and I fear it will be too loud. My parents use one in their basement laundry and I can hear it kicking around two floors up!

  • Hello and welcome!  I don't use vinegar in my wash, but it looks like you've gotten good suggestions.

Have you looked into wool dryer balls?  They might be quiet enough, with the same benefits of decreased dry time and static.
