Natural deodorant question

I bought the unscented version of Jason deodorant and while it seems to curb every day perspiration, I can still catch a faint smell of b.o.  I was only putting it on in the morning after my shower but was wondering if I need to apply it more often (like at night or mid-day?).

Anyone have any sucess with other natural deodorants?

Re: Natural deodorant question

  • I have not had success with natural deoderants, and oh boy have I tried Sad  I've tried so many different brands I've lost count.  Jasons, Burt's Bees, Tom's of Maine, the Crystal, and a bunch of other non-major names.  Every single one either left some b.o. behind, was sticky, left a residue on my clothes, irritated my skin, or a super-fun combination of more than one of those.  Nothing worked.  So I'm back to Dove unscented.  Hey, I am all for being green and lowering my toxic load, but the green products have to work [email protected] it!

  • Ditto SG. I've tried pretty much everything out there. Currently using Desert Essentials w/ tea tree oil. I think my favorite has been Aubrey Organics Men's Stock spray. The men's version of anything seems to work best, but I've gotten used to carrying a spare around with me and re-applying 2x or 3x / day.

If anyone has a miracle suggestion, I'd love to hear it...

  • Thanks ladies.

SG - does the Dove have aluminum in it?

Yep, this is me, too.  My most recent trial was Alba, but it didn't work, either.  I'm back to Arm & Hammer (the aluminum-free kind, but it still has triclosan).

  • Why not try Body Shop's deo-dry.  I haven't used it long but it seems to be working much better than many others.
  • I read a blog post about making your own with coconut oil, corn starch, and tea tree oil - anyone tried that?

    Yes, unfortunately.

A year or two ago when the board was more active there were several people who had done this.  Several were pleased and used it long-term and a few others were not satisfied with it.

    I use toxic antiperspirant/deodorant myself.

  • I use and love Gudonya's Stinky No More.  I've been using it for well over a year and it works really well for me.  H uses it, too, and really likes it.  We both use the Mayan Gold scent.  It works well as a unisex scent.

The downside is that you have to order online, so you have to make sure you don't run out and need a refill last minute.

I tried one with coconut oil, corn starch and baking soda. My skin broke out and it was terribly painful. I kinda think it was the baking soda. Now I'm wondering if what you are suggesting would work.

Right now I use dove. None of the naturals worked for me. Even with arm and hammer I had b.o. But I am also not completely happy with any of the non-ef ones I have tried. I think I am extra sweatyEmbarrassed

I use coconut oil and cornstarch.  It is messy, but works pretty well.  I think I just need to find a better way to apply the cornstarch.  Also, I've been doing it all summer when I've been mainly wearing tank tops.  I'm not sure what will happen once I'm wearing sleeves b/c coconut oil stains terribly.

I did a DIY one of baking soda with tea tree oil that I brushed on with a make-up brush, and it worked really well (smell-wise) for a few months, but I have sensitive underarms and it clogged my pores.

  • I use Kiss My Face "Liquid Rock" in the lavender scent.  It has Potassium Alum. I am not exactly clear whether this is as much of a health risk as regular aluminum, but from what I read, it is not really absorbed.  I feel better about using this than regular deodorant.  Just FYI: it is only a deodorant, so if it is hot out, you might get a little wet.  It def keeps my body odor away, but the wetness can be annoying sometimes.

the toms of maine spray deodorant works well, too (I tried the calendula scent), but has this in it, too. I am also unclear on its safety.

ETA: It does NOT have aluminum ingredients.  It does have sodium lauryl sulfate. It also works well at preventing odor.

I also use this. I actually keep this one in my purse as well. I also use Coconut by Lush.

  • My only success is with Kiss My Face that is lightly scented with cucumber and I think green tea. Otherwise yah smelly x 100000
  • I gave up on natural deos but I saw a dermatologist on tv recently who said to apply them at night and then again in the morning for better results. Haven't tried it, but if it was on tv then it has to be true, right? ;) She said something about your body absorbing it overnight while you aren't moving/sweating as much.

A friend of mine also reported much better results w/ the Tom's lavender scent. Apparently the ingredients are slightly different, but after trying the fruity scented one I haven't wanted to risk wasting more money on their deo.

  • I used Tom's and Jason's, both burned my skin and I had horrible rashes. They worked ok for the stink, I kept it in my purse though and reapplied often throughout the day. I eventually gave up on it and sadly went back to Dove. I couldn't even put my arms down while I was using the natural, it hurt so bad. I finally gave up on "natural" and went back to poisoning my body.... sigh.

Anyone else on here have really sensitive skin that found a nontoxic product that worked for them?
