so, I wanted to get your opinion on something...

I just opened my strawberries from FCF and they're all moldy :(  Now, this *could* be my fault because I got them last Friday and should have used them immediately, I just forgot.  However, I've kept strawberries in the fridge for 2 weeks and they've been fine (not quite as firm, but I can still cut them up, macerate them and eat them on ice cream or something).  Now, this could be because they are 'organic' and the ones I get at Safeway... aren't?  If you truly think this is my fault and I should expect this if I don't use them immediately, then I won't say anything.  thanks :)

ETA: did you used to get the smaller basket and have it last for two weeks?  that's what I was planning on doing because a) we couldn't eat that much produce in one week and b) it would just be too expensive to get it every week.  I guess I didn't think about the fact that maybe this stuff has a shorter shelf life?  Or do you think it's only certain things (like the salad you mentioned) and I just got unlucky?  Ok, that's all now :)

Re: *husky*

  • I have no evidence to back this up, but I'm pretty sure they went moldy within 1 week for 2 reasons:

    1. They're organic, so I've found that unless stored really well this stuff spoils faster.

    2. It wasn't stored so that air could circulate. I've gotten 2 of these big containers and 1 small one. I find that if I store my veggies in these then I can get a small box to last 2 weeks.  It does take a little finagling to get everything to fit and I should probably do a 3rd big container, but I've been lazy to order another one. 2 big ones plus a small one will fit about 85% of a small box and then I use everything that doesn't fit in the veggie keepers right away.

I can't figure out how to get the cut salad to last more than 2-3 days, even using these veggie keeper, so I've given up on that completely.

    HTH!

FWIW, i got strawberries from FCF a few weeks ago. i also *forgot* about them, and i didn't eat them until 1.5 weeks later. they were still fresh, crisp, and delicious. way better than anything i've ever had in the store.

good to know.  I think I learned my lesson - thoroughly check everything when I get it (maybe one strawberry was moldy and if I'd caught it the rest would be ok).  I'm glad to know that yours lasted longer though for future strawberry purchases!

  • I'm eating mine for bfast today. Big Smile
