Your house and company

Is your house ready to have company over at a moments notice?  How picky are you when having people over?

Re: Your house and company

  • The last week we've been really good.  Someone could stop by and I'd invite them in willingly.  However there are definitely only certain areas that are guest friendly.  I'm not a perfectionist because if I was then we would never have friends over and if they can't handle a little clutter then they probably aren't my friends anyways.

  • I'd say yes. The beds might not be made and all the clean laundry might not be put away though.

  • No. With 2 kids and 2 dog, definitely not. I just stopped watching 2 additional kids 2 days a week and part of the reason I stopped was because my house looked like a tornado went through it on those days.

  • yeah - its not spotless by any means, but I wouldn't be embarrassed if somebody just dropped by.

  • Yup.  Both DH and I are pretty particular when it comes to keeping the house presentable.  My floors might not be cleaned or vacuumed though, unless you are stopping by on the weekends.

  • Not exactly. DS is like a mini-tasmanian devil. I am pretty sure there are cheerios on our front porch and just inside the door that he spilled this morning on the way out, but I was already running late and didn't have time to clean it up. If we know someone is coming over we usually take 5-10 minutes to try and make it look presentable. I do my best but there are only so many hours in the day.

  • Very rarely.  We usually only have family over so when we do we usually have a good amount of notice.  For example we are having family over on Memorial day.  There will be a massive clean up this weekend.  But DH is really good at quick cleaning, so if someone does call and say "I will be over in 15 minutes!"  He can have the main areas looking nice.

  • I don't mind having company over, but I like a little bit of noticed so I can pick up all the baby toys and vacuum the floors quickly.

there are random cheerios/animal crackers/other kid related clutter in my house at all times - except the day after the cleaning lady is there.

If people can't handle that, we probably aren't friends.

  • Definitely not. I am trying to get better about it. I am a cluttered person (physically and mentally) and I am consciously making an effort to clean something up every day. My Mom didnt keep the house clean and organized growing up. Heck, my grandmother is/was a hoarder (I say was because she now lives with my aunt). Like almost as bad as on Hoarding: Buried Alive. For realz.

I feel badly about my lack of cleaning/organizational skills because DH grew up in a home where his mom cleaned daily. She still does. She is ready for company all the time. I'm trying, MIL. I promise.

This is why I love having dogs. They fix our cheerios/cracker problem. Stick out tongue

    Yes

  • Yes. I try to keep the main living areas of the house tidy and clean. Though they are not spotless like I would like them they are good enough. The master bath is probably the messiest place but guests do not need to go there. Our bed is made everyday, I can't stand it when it is not. The guest room is always clean as are the two extra bath rooms. For the most part it's perfectly presentable.
  • Nope.  My house is rarely company-ready.  H and I are both disorganized and it shows. Plus we have dog hair everywhere (two dogs who shed a lot = sweeping daily only does so much.)  We clean every weekend though, it just doesn't keep.  So our house isn't "dirty" but its not company-ready.  I try to clean before a party or something, but if we're having good friends over, then I don't especially care - that's why they're good friends.

I think if one of us was organized we wouldn't have an issue, but we're both kind of "meh" about mail all over the dining room table and the like, so it just builds up.

  • Absolutely not. Luckily we seem to live too far away for anyone to want to come see us. The only person who comes over regularly is FIL but he just comes in the back door and helps DH work on the basement. Our whole house is a disaster.

Actually MIL was over the other day waiting for carpet people while both DH and I couldn't be there and as usual the house was a mess. I'm embarrassed that our house is the way it is and especially with my parents and DH's parents I feel it reflects poorly on me as a wife and an adult. No one ever says anything though.

  • OMG no.  My house is never clean on a moments notice.

How picky I am about whether people see certain aspects of my dirty house depends on who it is...I get heartburn whenever my FIL or MIL come over because our house is a pigstye compared to theirs.  But our friends or my family, as long as the kitty litter is clean and not strewn across the bathroom floor, the kitchen counters are wiped and we've vacuumed at some point it the past month I'll call that good enough.

My bed is never made and there is usually a pile of laundry in the laundry room.  don't care about those.  I do get embarassed about the random piles of paper and cat hair tumbleweeds though.

  • It's presentable most days except for vacuuming.  I wish I would vacuum more often.

  • Ok yea no one is allowed in our apartment because it is a complete disaster. No seriously. We have lived here for almost a year now and my parents haven't been over since we moved in and they helped move us! same goes for his parents. The only one that has really been there is DHs uncle and he is usually only there for like 5 minutes if that! Its seriously horrible. I think it is one of my anxiety issues that i am trying to work on and i am seriously majorly overwhelmed with it. I need on of those cleaning shows to come in and help! My car is the same way!!! I just don't have the slightest idea where to start when it comes to cleaning and organizing!

This is my daughters room prior to me starting to try to clean it starting this past sunday. I was in there for about 3 hrs and felt like i did nothing. I was in there for another 2 last night and again looks like i did nothing!!! My living room and dining room are not much better! The kitchen is pretty clean right now as is my bathroom. Our bedroom looks like the closet threw up!

  • Tygress - Isn't 6 old enough to put away her own clothes and toys?  I mean, not that she won't make a mess, but she could help you clean it up and keep it clean.

    How's her ankle?

Yea but i think its to the point that it is just way to overwhelming now. I know it is seriously overwhelming for me so i can't possibly see how its not for her. So my plan is to get it completely cleaned (with her help) and start completely new. Where she is going to be the one keeping it cleaned!!! I was in there cleaning last night and she was helping me some.

Her ankle is doing tons better! The swelling is totally gone now and shes back up and running around like a nut!!!

  • Our house isn't a mess, but it's not super clean and neat either.

When I know people are coming over, I just make sure the toilets/sinks are wiped down, and I've vacuumed recently.  I don't freak out about making sure everything is spotless though.

  • With having someone come in every 2-weeks to give it a thorough cleaning, our house stays in pretty good shape.  We could stand to vacuum more often as a general rule of thumb, but I'm pretty on top of the clutter, the bathrooms don't get gross, and I tend to wipe the kitchen down every night when I'm doing dishes after dinner.

  • Nope, not ready for company at all.  When it was just the two of us, sure.  Now it's cluttered with DD's stuff, stuff we haven't gotten to, cleaning that needs to be done...it's like we are always doing a major clean instead of just keeping up with it.
