Last family pic questions lol sorry

Ok, they are next Saturday at 8am outside at the ranch.  One "outfit" we are doing is all wearing white shirts - H and DS in a white polo and me in a white v-neck tee.  Then I want to change - and we will all still be in jeans but help me out:

I've been told Green is my best color - H has amazing blue eyes and looks great in blue and DS looks awesome in red.  So I'm thinking do a navy blue for H - maroonish red for DS and a hunter green for me.  Will they translate well for a picture of all 3 of us?  And H and I are doing some just us shots and some just DS shots as well so will that look good?

And what jewelry should I wear?  I was thinking silver studs for earrings or I have pearl studs but what necklace?  I have a pearl necklace but doesn't seem right for this setting.  Links and stuff I can buy online would be most helpful as I won't have much time to shop between then and now.

And we are all wearing our boots and jeans for the bottoms for all the pictures.

Re: Last family pic questions lol sorry

  • And if the hunter green shirt is okay I have a crew neck tee in that color from JCrew - and I have it in a 3/4 sleeve boatneck so that's the style I would wear if I do this color.  So H would be in a Polo most likely.  And DS as well.  Unless all of us in t-shirts or casual shirts (more than a polo) would be better with the jeans and rustic setting.

  • I wouldn't put your DH and DS both in polos, that sounds a little school uniform-ish.  I like it when kids are in a pattern, I think they can pull it off better than adults.  As for you, if you're going to wear a very simple top then I would pick a bolder necklace.

H has a white button up that he could fold the cuffs, then DS in a polo and me in a vneck?  I also just found a 3/4 sleeve boatneck in white that I might wear instead of a vneck?

  • I would not do three different colors with only three people in the pics. It will break you guys upntoo much. You want a cohesive look that doesn't pull focus so your faces are where people's eyes go to first. I think you'll end up looking at e clothes then focusing on faces. Its not what you want in portraits. I probably wear a navy top layered over a red tank so it peaks out just a bit at the bottom or a navy cardigan over a red shirt mostly covered so it's again just peaking out. Or throw a navy cardi over your white t and add a red belt or necklace to tie everyone together. The only problem with mixing white in is you'll have an American flag going. My friend who is a photographer posted this blog on her buiness fb page this morning. I do not know this person so please don't think I'm in any way trying to push anyone on this blog. She said there is a great what to wear section on here, so I'm passing it on to you. http://www.buphotography.com/blog/?category_name=what-to-wear
  • Exactly - I love my country but didn't want to look too patriotic.  But I've been given contrasting advice - wear the same color but different shades or wear all different colors of the same darkness, etc.  I am just wanting to decide and get what I need ordered so it will be here in time.  Eek, thanks for the link - I will check it out.

And I have a red cardigan so I could essentially wear white and red and have blue jeans on and then have H in blue and DS in red but again - too patriotic?

  • I think our best family photos come when I pick the shirt for my kids first - I always like to start with a simple pattern piece, and usually do some kind of stripe/argyle not too busy. And then pick coordinating colors out of that pattern for DH and myself.

I would not pick three completely different colors unless they are the same tone and something ties them all back together or you won't like how you pict turns out (usually I don't).

If you want blue and green stick with that. Do a cute argyle vest like this one from gymboree for DS you wear a simple green sweater with a necklace and maybe a light blue polo for DH and all wear jeans with boots. A cute variation would be to cuff all of your pants and go barefoot for a few photos depending on the weather.

I also love to give DS an accessory, maybe a standout yellow truck and you wear yellow tone in your necklace - you will get some cute solo shots of your kid that way and the photos turn out less posed. My kids also cooperate much better when they have something to focus on.

    LINK to vest HERE.

I read some of that other advice and I really don't agree with it.    I do agree with pp when she said to start with the child's shirt and pull from there.  Since you're going to be at a ranch and wearing boots, what about something like this for DS:

    Old Navy:

    image

Your H can wear a navy polo or even a navy crewneck sweater with the sleeves rolled up (I'd do a white tshirt under in either case so you see a little of the white under the blue).

For you, pull the green out of that shirt.  The green is a little limey in that so I'd use it as a cami under a white cardigan instead of wearing the solid green.  A plain white tee (a 3/4 sleeve boatneck would be perfect) with a bold green necklace would look great too, something like this (not quite what I'm looking for but you get the idea):

    Kohl's

ETA: We did a similar color scheme for our family photos in November, I can post a pic of what we did if you want.

Yes I would love to see a pic - I'm googling now!  I love purple and have a ton of it as clothing options but not much in the way of green.  But I like the necklace you posted too.  Any PIP of family pics would be awesome.  Thanks!

  • What if I do me in jeans, a white shirt and a grey cardigan, H in a plaid shirt (hopefully blue plaid) and DS in a solid polo - maybe white?

  • I"m taking inspiration from this:

    http://www.merephoto.com/blog/family/fashion-guide-what-to-wear-for-family-portraits/

As I said DS looks awesome in red so if H had a plaid shirt, then DS would be in solid - or do a plaid shirt for DS and have H in solid?  That might work better huh?

    http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=41785&vid=1&pid=812133&scid=812133002

was a suggestion from above so maybe just do the red one?  ugh, i hate deciding this can you tell?  sorry i have so many questions i just want them to look good b/c we are using these as mother's day gifts too!

  • I like that shirt for your DS and that would totally work with the grey cardi/white cami inspiration for you, I'd do a necklace with some red in it as well.  I'd put your H in a solid then, red or white (whatever he looks better in).

  • I'm thinking H in white so that when we do our pictures just the two of us we coordinate.  I want this over with already lol.

Thanks for uploading your pic - that's a beautiful family!  I like the green but don't necessarily like green on me although my coworker told me that's a great color on me.  And I do have a green cardigan I get compliments on often.  So that might make my decision too lol.  I need to look in our closets and see what works then go from there.  Thanks so much!

  • I forgot about polyvore!!!  I'm such a dork and a half.  Thanks!  I think I will wear a white vneck tee with a grey vneck cardigan, jeans and my boots and DS will wear something in the red category - possibly the shirt I posted above, and then H will wear a blue polo or white polo if it matches.  Otherwise he can wear a white button up with the cuffs turned up.  I will polyvore it to see if I like the look.  Thanks again so much you are awesome!

  • I pick the kiddo's outfit first, and then coordinate for me and DH.  I lay it all out on the bed or the floor together to see how it looks together.  I don't like it to be too "matchy matchy".

  • Thanks for posting - what a beautiful family!  And I"m glad you have glasses - I wasn't sure whether to wear mine or do contacts that day.  I've had issues with my contacts and am now in glasses 100% of the time but on random days I like to wear contacts - going to the zoo, etc.

I think the decision is going to come from what can I find for DS - but mine will be a white vneck with a grey cardigan and H will depend upon the shirt we find for DS.  And H has a ton of shirts so I might not have to get him anything additional so I will go through our closets tonight and see what i can find.  How do i PIP again?  I want to get some outfits together and maybe PIP them so you can all decide!  :)
