Do you and your DH ever use a gold prospecting metal detector on your gold trips?  I am looking into one for DH for his birthday and have no clue which brand is good.

Re: **abvernon**

  • Why yes he does! DH just got one last year for it.

Let me ask him the exact brand and model as he did alot of research on this.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!  I am lost.  I did a quick google search yesterday and was overwhelmed with the different types and the cost!  DH was given one (just a standard medal dectector, you know, the kind people use on the beach) a couple of years ago, but, it really isn't tuned to pick up gold.
  • yah it is overwhelming. He did some research through some of the gold prospecting clubs he belongs and got first hand opinions.

I have a White?s GMZ. It is a no-frills, simple-to-use metal detector in the 5KHz range.  It runs in all-metal mode so there is no discrimination or fancy identifying of targets (coins, nuggets, trash, etc.)  and no identification of the type of metal (gold, silver, aluminum, steel).   It is actually a stripped down model of the GMT.

    Pros:

    Inexpensive < $500

simple, only 2 control knobs and salt mode on/off.

Runs in silent mode, that is only targets and noise can be audibly heard.

With a simple manual ground balance, it is simply turn, balance, then detect

    Lightweight and not so bulky

    Cons:

    No fancy detecting/identifying of targets

Runs in silent mode?. Non-silent (traditional) you can ?train? your ear to different sounds targets make and identify stuff

No gauges or meters that move when a ?worthy? target is found.
