What is the internet?

One of my friends posted this video on facebook. It made me smile and think how crazy it is that it was just about 16 years ago. Can anyone here even imagine life without the internet???

Re: What is the internet?

  • That is crazy. It is hard to remember a time before the Internet. I still remember when we got online for the first time. It was slow as snot, I think we paid per minute at first, and my AOL screen name was PinkBaby13. So I guess I was 13 at the time.
  • Yup- I remember the first time getting on was at my best friend's house. It was super slow and we were going to the MTV site and there was so much on it it seriously took forever. I was probably 16 or 17 at the time.

  • When I first started college, email was just starting to become popular.  Only it was the black screen with green type mainframe type email.  Think the movie WarGames with the big black screen with green text saying, "Would you like to play a game?"  Granted - the movie was 1983 and I started college in 1994, but that's about as far as the internet had progressed at that point.  It was virtually impossible to send to someone outside of your organization.

I would guess that by the end of college (1998), the internet was becoming more popular but still nothing like it is now.  I would say that it really took hold while I was in law school (1998 to 2001).

Does Encyclopedia Britannica even print hard copies anymore?

    That's a good question!

I'd say you're right about it taking hold around 98- that's the year I started college and my freshman year I had an email account, I started instant messaging, and we were online in my apartment. My first time on the internet was about 2 years before that.

When we got AOL - the chat rooms and instant messaging was just about all I did.  I played the occasional game, but that's it.

I do remember the first website that I went to.  I had a bag of M&Ms and noticed the web address on the package.  So I went there.  I played some of their games and just fumbled my way around the site.  That's a random internet memory.  :)
