Do you like stand-up comedy?

DH makes fun of me because I think most stand up is terrible.  I admit, I get a little pearl-clutchy about raunchy humor or humor that is degrading to women so that rules out like half of all comedians right there.

I also don't like comedians who have too much of a schtick (eg: Larry the Cable Guy) and I don't like comedians that just yell all the time--it seems like half the people on Last Comic Standing just yelled all their jokes or used some sort of weird voice.

And I hate hate hate Dane Cook.  Hate.

I find a lot of things to be funny--TV shows, other people, commercials--Do I just have a sense of humor that is off from stand-up audiences?

Which comedians do you like?

Re: Do you like stand-up comedy?

  • Yes, I like all kinds...  I'm not picky.  DH loves it and Comedy Central is always on in our house or Raw Dog/Comedy (XM) is on in his car.   I'm not good at names so I can't tell you who I like or don't like...

  • I like stand up comedy.

Dane Cook sucks - I don't know what the appeal is with him.

I like Kathy Griffin and Chris Rock, Ralphie May, but generally I like to watch comedians, but I don't catch alot of names.

I don't see the appeal of Larry the cable guy or Ron White either (although I do chuckle at Ron White a bit)

  • Some of it. I don't like the stuff that is degrading to women but there can be some other funny stuff out there.  I don't seek it out or anythign though - if we're flipping channels and something is on Comedy Central, we may stop and watch for a bit.

  • I've grown to like stand up because of DH.  My favorite is David Cross. We've seen a few stand up shows live - Richard Lewis and Bob Saget.  And we've seen a ton on tv - including Dane Cook (not a fan so much either), Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, Robin Williams (one of the best), and Dana Carvey (another best).  I also like Bill Maher for political humor.
  • Love it! Some favorites are Stephen Lynch, Aziz Ansari, Nick Swardson, and Daniel Tosh.  We've seen George Carlin a few times (years ago, obviously) and anytime Stephen Lynch is in town we try to see him.  we saw Ron White also but I wasn't a huge fan.
  • The only comedians who have truly cracked me up are Robin Williams and Brian Regan, who I first heard of about ten years ago.

In general, though, I don't find the supposed-humor funny.  I don't like raunchy jokes, I don't like fat jokes, I don't like women-is-bitchez jokes.  Apparently my sense of humor is severely lacking.

  • Yes, one of my first stand-up shows was when Lewis Black came to my college and I loved him (even though he yells a lot).  My brother also convinced me to go see Brian Regan live and he was really good. DH and I also love watching Daniel Tosh on tv, both on Tosh.0 and a sand-up show we found on Netflix.

  • I LOVE, LOVE LOVE Mitch Hedburg.  (R.I.P.)  Saw him at my school and had tickets to see him again, but he died right before that show.  Crying

Besides that most stand-up I could take or leave.  I have a soft-spot for Ron White, but the rest of the Blue Collar Comedy tour makes me stabby.  (I hate Larry the Cable Guy in particular)  Not a big Dane Cook fan.

I don't like jokes about women being the ball and chain or men being useless idiots.  I don't like anything that sounds like a gay joke, a fat joke, or a racial joke - but I love observational humor.  I prefer comics who tell stories rather than jokes (mitch aside).  I had a free trial to XM in my new car and I spent a lot of time listening to Raw Dog and decided I love Aziz Ansari.

  • As a general rule, I don't really care for standup comedy. I can't stand Dane Cook.

However, DH and I are obsessed with Mitch Hedberg. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice. Whenever we take a road trip, we listen to Mitch. He's absolutely hysterical but some people don't appreciate his humor.

I also love Ron "Tater Salad" White and Bill Engvall. "Here's Your Sign" never gets old to me.

Forgot about Aziz Ansari - love him too.

I think this is me too.  I like Aziz Ansari too but I had never heard of him until Parks and Rec.  DH knew that half that cast has stand-up background--I had no clue.  I also like Kathy Griffin and she tells stories with commentary  too--maybe that's a common denominator I can get behind.

  • I'm not a fan of stand-up at all.  DH tried to get me to go to comedians in college and it's just not my cup of tea.  I often feel embarrassed at how bad they are.

The one time I went to a regular comedy club with a bunch of random no-name comics this is exactly how I felt.

  • I love stand-up comedy.  When Comedy Central first came about, that's all that was on, and on VH1 (late night).

Mitch Hedberg is a definite favorite...I miss him!!!  Dana Carvey, Lewis Black, Robin Williams....all fantastic.  I like Ron White, Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, Ralphie May...and a lot of old comics too.

I know many people hate him, but I enjoy Dane Cook - before he got all popular and crazy, he was hilarious.

  • Ditto Link & Wawa on seeing local comedy- a friend's XH took a stab @ it in NYC and it was painful.

That being said I love Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher.  Have seen them both live- money well spent.

I would pay to see Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings- and a handful of other comics who do Chelsea's show.

  • I find a lot of it funny, but I take a lot of that raunchy and men/women stereotyping doesn't bother me. There are some things that do, but I have rarely seen it in stand up. I love lots of those mentioned in pp, but one I didn't she mentioned is Ellen. She is way funnier doing stand up than I would have guessed!

  • I never really watched stand-up before I was with DH. On one of our earlier "big" dates, he took me to a comedy club and we saw Mickey Cucchiella. Between him and the guy who opened for him, I was crying with laughter. I like the Blue Collar Comedy tour (though I don't care for Larry the Cable guy). I also think Lewis Black is funny though I always feel like he's 2 seconds away from having a major stroke. And I sometimes like Dane Cook, though some of his stuff is a bit too raunchy for my taste. But in general, it takes a lot to offend me.

DH will put on Last Comic Standing or just Comedy Central and watch who ever is on. I don't have patience for that. I rarely find those random people funny at all.

Ditto this. My old college roommate introduced him to me on a trip to buy dorm room decor at Urban Outfitters and I couldn't stop laughing. Saw him live only once and I miss him too!
