Bone Marrow Drive in HarCo

Next Saturday, February 5 there will be a bone marrow drive at Trinity Lutheran (On Philadelphia Rd in Joppatowne) from 9-2. They are looking for a match for a 3 year old who has acute myeloid leukemia, but if you are tested you are registered in the national bank and could be matched to anyone in need of a transplant across the nation. The test is just a cheek swab. I got the invite from a friend on fb. Here is the link.

Re: Bone Marrow Drive in HarCo

  • Crap- just read the link from that page and it looks like it costs $50 to be tested. I probably won't be able to swing that, but maybe someone here can.

  • wow, it's so upsetting that you have to pay to be tested. That will keep people from doing it.

  • Where did you see the cost part? I must have missed that.
  • I just read through the info and don't see the cost part either?

  • I am already registered with the national registry . If you go online and request a kit, it's all done through mail. There is a fund that covers the cost of the testing, and I didn't have to pay anything. That said, the fund may have run out of money, IDK. I would go on the bone marrow donor website and check it out. They may require a few for onsite testing, but I really don't know.

There was a local testing like this a few years ago, where a church or other organization was covering the cost of the tests.
  • In the comments there is this link. It says...

"The cost for registering to be a match is $50 dollars."

ETA: That's why I didn't see it at first either. I think I'll ask in the comments to be sure.

  • They responded that it is $50 but they would accept whatever I could afford right now and they have donors covering some of the expenses. I'm gonna talk with DH since we were both planning to get tested and see what we can do.

  • From what I can tell, it is still free to do it on line. They ask that if you can make a contribution that you do, but it isn't mandatory.
  • It is definitely still free to do online. I actually just sent my swabs in last week.  They suggest making a $50 donation since that covers the cost to process the cheek samples, but you can still be added to the registry for free. If you sign up online, they send you a little kit and you just swipe the inside of your cheek on 4 Q-tips and send them back in a postage paid envelope. Easy!
