OB/GYN Recs

I know that it has been asked quite a few times, but I need recs. Who do you use and why do you like them? I prefer a female, but would consider a guy if they are highly recommended.

My OB was diagnosed with breast cancer in my 3rd tri with C and I don't really like the Dr. that I went with at that point. I told myself that I was going to find a new one right after C was born and well...he just turn 3 and I haven't yet.

Re: OB/GYN Recs

  • I'm going to see Dr Westcott in a week or so- she was highly referred to me by Janice - she said Dr Westcott delivered all 3 of her kids (and for her to refer a dr thats not in her office, says alot about dr wescott)

I also saw Dr Berryman for a few ultrasounds when Janice wasnt available, she she was really nice too.

  • I absolutely adore Dr. Somer-Shely at Methodist.  She delivered both boys and I'm seeing her for this pregnancy, too.  I started going to her before I was even sexually active and she's been great through every stage -- including my miscarriage and PPD.  I like that I have no problem getting into see her, too.

I second Dr. Somer-Shely- I love her and she will be delivering this baby as well!  She was wonderufl with the ist delivery and has been great so far with this one- just saw her yesterday actually!  Her nurses have been great as well-

  • I see dr. Ann sjulin. She was recommended by Holly and others I think. I picked her mainly b/c she was female and I needed to move to someone who would deliver at Bergan. I'll still go see Dr. D if needed if I decide to have more children.  I love Sjulin.  Very down to earth, tells it to you straight which is what I like in a Dr. She is right at 72nd and Center which is close to home for me which was also another preference. So many docs now are only using lakeside or methodist woman's hosp. and I just refuse to drive all the way out there if I don't need to.The other nice thing about Sjulin is she has 2 PA's who are really good also.  So you can see them if she is out delivering a baby.

It's very hard switching drs. and I was nervous just because I had been under Dr. D's care for 3ish years so I was very spoiled by her office and how things were done.  I felt like I was breaking up with them after my last appt at 12ish weeks.

  • Well I think I see the Dr. you don't like, Dr. DeVries.  I like him...but hey!

Anyway, Linda Collins and Jill Burke in the same office are great too!  My girlfriend Lindsey just switched to Jill Burke and she loves her so far!

  • I see Dr. Thomas Martin out at the Women's Hospital.  He is wonderful and I couldn't ask for a better OB.  He was great with DH during our appointments when I was pregnant.  He has a way of making you feel very comfortable.  He is just great!
  • I see Dr. John Cote with Alegent Health Clinic and really like him. He has offices at both 8141 Center and Lakeside. I've also seen Dr. Erin Evans when Cote was delivering and she was really nice too. I know several girls on here swear by Dr. NewMyer who is also at the 8141 office.

Embarrassed Yep...and I don't know exactly what it is about him that I don't like. He was great when C went into complete distress and they had to do an emergency c/s...from the time they said "we are doing a c/s now" until C was born was 7 minutes...and I had to be wheeled into an OR in that time.

I thought about Collins, but I know nothing about Burke. Is it odd to switch doctors and stay within the same practice?

  • I love my OB. Dr. Stephen Kruszka (391-5022). He delivers at Bergan, and that's where his office is as well. He treats DH like he's part of the process, even when I was sick 2 years ago and it wasn't fertility related... he still made sure DH was involved in all decisions and conversations. I know a couple other Nesties use him (or used to) because that's where I heard about him!

He is the only dr in his practice, so I only see him. He rarely takes vacations and he has a friend in another practice for when he does go out of town. If you call after hours, he is the one who calls you back (and when I needed him most during my illness, he was there for every question, even at 1:30 in the morning).

The only downfall are his hours - M, T, Th 8 to 3. W & F 7 to 2. That's my only complaint, but having been in the hospital over the weekend with my illness, I understand why he does it -- he does 2, sometimes 3 rounds a day, 7 days a week. I haven't had any issues getting in to see him though - TTC, illness, or PG.

I didn't like DeVries.  He always read my u/s, and I thought his handshake was weak and he wasn't very personable.

I giant puffy heart Dr. Collins.  I've seen her since I was 18.  I thought the way she handled the 17 hours between when she thought baby A way too small to when she did my c/s was fantastic.

Some people aren't crazy about NP Jackie, but I never had a problem with her.  The other NP Wendy was super nice the one time I went to her.

  • Dr Burke was my ob for H and she was just so-so to me - not super friendly or warm just kind of eh. While delivering H Collins was the dr on call and I fell in love with her. She was just awesome and exactly what I wanted. I switched to her with S and am so completely happy with my decision. I see her NP Wendy, and I absolutely love her as well. All the people I have recommended to the both of them have been completely happy. Best of luck girl!!

  • I really like my OB, Dr. Carlson. I liked his attitude at our first appointment (Let's get you pregnant) and the fact that he was willing to be as aggressive with diagnosis and treatment as we wanted right away, there was no "try for 6 months and we'll see." My first appt was a Wednesday, I had an HSG on Friday and Monday dh was in for his SA. Testing took a month, but I was pregnant the following cycle. He is cautious with me, sees me frequently and does a no-charge bedside ultrasound at almost every appointment. He is upfront with each step of the process, realizes that while I am an RN, I am NOT an OB RN and involves dh in the conversations and decisions. The only downside for you would be that his office is at the Women's Hospital...

  • Dr Gema Simmons - She has offices near Lakeside and at Immanuel.
  • "I thought about Collins, but I know nothing about Burke. Is it odd to switch doctors and stay within the same practice?"

I don't think its weird at all.  Granted, I switched to DeVries because of of Clemmer's illness, but I've never seen Clemmer in the office again since my switch (I don't even know if she is still practicing or not).

I have honestly only met Collins.  She is who delivered Nathaniel.  My hospital room was completely chaos because of his speediness and between looking at her and DH I felt calm in the midst of the storm.  If something happened to DeVries or I no longer felt comfortable with him, I wouldn't hesitate to switch to Collins.

Dr. Burke was in the OR with DeVries when my friend Kayla had her c/s in August.  I really had no interaction with her except to look over her shoulder at the whole process while holding my friend's hand.

Maybe just make an appt. to meet Collins and/or Burke and see what you think.  If you don't like them, them consider switching offices.

  • Like E said, I see Dr. Ann Sjulin and LOVE, LOVE, LURRRVE her, her NP's and the entire practice. Everyone there is super nice. The girls at the front know me so once they see me walk in they say "Hi Holly! I'll let them know you are here" so i don't even have to really "check in". (Is that a good or bad thing? Smile) David really likes her too. I wouldn't change for nothin...she's awesome!

Oh, and Kendra and Jess (SCB) also go to the same office, just different docs. I think they really like their OB's also!
