book club newbie--help!!

Hi Everyone,

I've just joined a new book club and am responsible for making the next selection. From what I can tell, there is quite a wide range of book tastes in our group. So far we've read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Look Again, and A Dirty Job.  Last night one of the girls mentioned that she was thinking about choosing a book written by Snookie or the Situation from the Jersey Shore!?! Yikes :) Can anyone recommend a book/books that would make for a successful first choice and help bridge the gap a little between all of our book preferences? I've been lurking the last little while and notice that there seem to be lots of people who really enjoyed The Sky is Everywhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: book club newbie--help!!

  • For one book club we just read "The Last Child" by John Hart and for the other we are reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

  • I just read The Help and loved it.  There would probably be quite a bit to talk about there.

  • We did "The Help" for our last book club and it was a great discussion.

  • Time of My Life: A Novel by Allison Winn Scotch

I just joined my first book club and this was our first book. We haven't had the discussion yet, but after reading the book I can see it being an great discussion.

It's a "what if you had made a different decision in life" type of book. You do have to suspend a tad bit of reality as the main character gets transported back in time to have her "second chance at life".

It was a really easy read, and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Very thought provoking.

However, I definitely think The Help is a great book too.

  • We just read The Art of Racing in the Rain and everyone loved it.

  • The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield... my book club loved it!
