Thanksgiving

Are you visiting family or hosting this year?

We're traveling up to NJ to see my extended family on my Dad's side...DH's never been - it will be interesting and quite entertaining I'm sure!

I want to make something to bring that will travel well...any suggestions and ideas along with recipes???  All I can think of is banana bread, pumpkin bread, or cookies.  :-/

Re: Thanksgiving

  • We're going to host something the week before for my side of the family. I'm not sure if we're going to MIL's or BIL's for Thanksgiving yet.

I just want to go Black Friday shopping but I don't know where to go. We're not near any stores and its hard enough to wake up that early...

Do you want a dessert or a side? And will you be able to heat something up once you get there? I'll wait until you answer those before I start posting a ton of recipes. =)

  • We're doing Thanksgiving with J's mom side and everyone has been asked to bring 2 dishes. I'm doing cheesecake bites (delish!) and homemade mac and cheese since I have a new carrying case and it can be reheated and all once we get there.

I could reheat at my cousins house, but it'll be about a 7hr drive at the very least for us to get up there which is my only concern/dilema...unless there's something that will travel ubber well.

  • We always go to O's mom and dad's. I don't want to host anything until I absolutely have to. We very rarely go to my family's b/c there really isn't enough room.

  • we are still undecided with what to do for thanksgiving.  our families both live about 20 minutes apart.  so we really SHOULD see both of them.  gerren and his dad hunt all day on thanksgiving, and this year his mother will be gone.  so i instantly feel like after hunting, we should go to my families and do the regular big thanksgiving.  i dont think his dad will do anything at all since his mom is gone.  but with that said, i dont want his dad to feel all neglected and sh*t.  and gerren isn't helping bc he wont talk to his dad about it to see what he wants to do.  the LAST THING I WANT is to spend thanksgiving dinner with gerren and his dad, just the three of us.  we will watch tv and probably eat pizza.  but i also refuse to do thanksgiving separate--him with his dad and me with my family.

    HALP!

  • Being that I don't think our 800 square foot apartment will suffice for hosting, we'll be going to my in-laws for Thanksgiving since Christmas is with my family.

I think you can't go wrong with pumpkin bread! Or how about baked apples with cinnamon and brown sugar? They can easily be reheated in the oven once you get there.

  • We're going to DH's aunt and uncle's in PA to mainly visit his gparents since they aren't doing so well and we won't know how many more holidays we'll have with them.
  • We aren't sure. We hosted for DHs side last year, but we were a little crunched with space. DH isn't reallly wanting to atttempt it again, but he is a bit of a scrooge on that front.

I have asked around with my grandparents, but I noone knows what is going on yet. We aren't real big planners I guess.

  • We're going to FIL and SMIL's house in Asheville NC for Thanksgiving. It's about 6.5 hours away for us. I am so sad about not spending it with my family?it'll be my first holiday away from them?but I know we'll have a good time.

Items to bring that are good for travel can be tricky. I think you're on the right track with desserts though. They seem to go travel well. Offer to bring some pies, bread, cookies or even supplies for a cheese/veggie tray, etc., depending on how far you have to travel. If there will be alc., you could offer to bring something like that too. There are always little snacks/apps/drinks that are needed that you wouldn't normally think of. I'd just ask what's needed! :)

  • There are a lot of things you could prep and put together and then just cook once you get there, but it really depends on if whoever is hosting will have the extra oven space.

    Apple Pie

Celery & Onion Stuffing - you can do everything but cook it and it will be fine in the car for 7 hours.

Sugar Coated Pecans - These are UNBELIEVABLY good. I doubled the egg whites and subbed vanilla extract for water.

Fresh Cranberry Sauce - You could make this and then just warm it up there. Only use 1/4 to 1/2 c. of orange juice.

Cheesecake would travel well too. Maybe do it in cupcake form? I'm going to take this recipe  and try it with canned pumpkin.

  • I believe we're hosting this year. I'm excited but nervous about a dry turkey. I need to do a dry run before the actual holiday. Ba dum bum.

Jen what about a pie or an app??

  • Shauni - can G's dad go to your family's with you guys?

  • Shauni - Would it be insanely awkward to invite his dad to your family after they get done hunting? Just a suggestion and it kills 2 birds with one stone :)

Lia - We went to Asheville for our "mini"moon. LOVED it! Jeremy wants to move there now ha

  • I make a killer apple pie and I'd love to take that, but do you guys think that will travel well?  I guess I just immediately thought no but maybe it'd be ok?

I haven't been up to see family at Thanksgiving in years, but from what I remember there wasn't any cheesecake or something like that...so that might be something different and good to make.

  • I think it depends on the apple pie recipe. If its one thats usually juicier and the crust gets a bit soggy if its sits, than it probably wouldn't make it the whole trip.

When I made one to take to MILs last year, I made it the night before and before I put the apples on the crust, I ran some saltless saltines (that sounds funny) through the food processor and sprinkled them on top of the crust. It absorbed all of the juice from the apples. I just tossed the pie in the oven at 375 for 15 mins. to warm it up when it was time for dessert.

  • thanks girls, i told gerren to invite his dad to our thanksgiving!  that is what would be best! but A) gerren hasnt and B) we know he will say no.
  • We are going to my aunt and uncle's house for Thanksgiving. It is only across town so it's not far to transport, but I am going to attempt to make these. I hope they turn out well... http://www.favoritebrandrecipes.com/Recipes/960/913002960.htm

Don't wait for Gerren and just insist that his Dad comes with you and does not spend Tday alone.

  • Although I love them, holidays drive me up the wall. Since Sam's parents are divorced can't celebrate together we have to visit them seperately and with my parents it's just me here since my sister lives in Japan so I feel like I should be there for them (that and they're definitely more easygoing then Sam's fam). Everyone lives about 15 minutes apart and since his parents demand to do things seperately and that we show up that's three places we have to go to in one day...if I had it my day we'd celebrate the night before with his family and the day of with mine...but I'm a selfish snot.

On the food note though. One of my fave desserts is gingerbread with whipped cream. The gingerbread should travel pretty well and you can pick up whipped cream at the last minute. It will make your car smell all pretty too!

  • Both of our families are local, we will go to DH family (My family is not big into holidays)
  • We are going to the In-Laws!  I am bringing pie . . .sorry no help :(
