Library sale today- what to expect?

So I've never found out about ours, but finally did this year after some searching. It's all of our libraries and it's in the event center... starting this morning. About what price do they usually sell for? And are there some good ones?

Re: Library sale today- what to expect?

  • The 2 libraries I go to give you paper grocery bags and you pay $1 or $2 to fill each one. The other one I've been to is $1 for hardbacks and audiobooks and $.50 for paperbacks. LOTS of good books. I easily fill a whole grocery bag. Have fun, hope you get a lot!

  • My library has an ongoing sale table in the front of the library, and doesn't do a big annual sale like some do.  The book sale table is $1 for hardcovers and $.50 for paperbacks.

At some bigger annual sales I've been to, they're usually about the same price, sometimes a couple of dollars for newer hardcovers at the most.  The ones I've been to are usually a bunch of tables out on the library lawn, sometimes under a tent, and usually only semi-organized by genre and author.

Good luck - I hope you get a good haul!

  • I think it really depends - I try to go in to library sales not expecting anything.

Around here they're usually $1/book. They're not usually sorted - or sorted very broadly (ie, this is all fiction, this is all nonfiction). I usually try to give myself a good chunk of time to browse through.

The last day of our sale is always a stuff-a-bag event where you can load up your bag for $3 or so. Those get crazy with people just shoveling books into bags!

  • Library sales with the "fill a bag for $x" have ruined me for all other library book sales and used book stores. There's a huge one (ironically in a tiny little town) once a year near me and I easily fill up 2 or 3 bags and have never spent more than $10! I usually find that I have to do a lot of searching, but I've found a lot of good stuff.

And if you go on the last day, there are usually better deals. But the books are pretty picked through, so it's win-lose.

  • My local library usually just does .50 cents/paperback and $1/hardback.  I wish they did it by the bag!

  • I definitely need to come to your book sales! I went to the one closest to my job (the library I always go to) and the books were on "sale" for $5 or $3 each! I was like uh no thanks!

  • Told DH I had to run to the atm in case they don't take a debit card and he asked how much cash I would need for it.. I said probably not more than $20... he handed me $60. It's ON! j/k I doubt I could even spend that much at a library sale if I tried! haha. Thanks ladies. Getting the kiddos cleaned up for grandmas and I'm off!

Holy crap!  I agree, you'd probably have trouble spending that if you tried - assuming it's anything like the sales that most of us have been to.

I wish the libraries near me did fill-a-bag sales!  That's awesome!

  • All this library book sale talk is making me jealous.  I recently moved and I don't think that the library system here does book sales.  I've looked at their calendar and there is no mention of any.  I miss my old town where the library had sales twice a year Crying

  • I am in the midst of wrapping up our annual book sale. My coworkers were getting on my case a couple of days ago because they don't think that I price the books high enough-- it's been $1 a bag for the last couple of years. I know that we make a little less money that way, but I think we move a lot more books, and that means less that I have to box up and ship out to Better World Books in the end.
  • I ended up with:

    Stephen King:

    Bag of Bones

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

    The Shining

    Insomnia

    The Color Purple

    Moloka'i

    The Thirteenth Tale

    The Historian

    Audrey, Wait!

    Dead Until Dark

    Fear Nothing- Dean Koontz

    Everyone Worth Knowing

    Elsewhere- Gabrielle Zevin

    Second Helpings

    Charolette's Web

    Uglies

    Extras

    Looking for Alaska

    Impossible

    Lock and Key- Dessen

A ton of kids books and VHS's

    Whew!

  • Wow you got a lot- how much did you end up spending on all of that?!

I just checked the website for our local library and their sale is tomorrow and Saturday- I may have to venture over Saturday!!!
