Fingers Crossed For Me, Ladies

I emailed my boss today to set up a conference call next week to talk about me coming back to work (what date) and about "options that might exist to come back part-time".

I debated mentioning that particular agenda item in my email but, at the end of the day, I wanted him to have time to let it sink in and not just drop it on him during the call next week.

I sent him the email this morning asking what day would be good to talk and I haven't heard a thing back yet.  *gulp*  Fingers crossed for me ladies.......

  • I hope it goes just the way that you want!  You don't have to go back for a couple more months, right?  Or are you thinking you'll go back sooner than that?

  • I dreaded that conversation too, especially the part time portion. Good luck. I hope it goes well for you.
  • good for you, I was wondering what you were going to do.  I am feeling a little guilty because I am actually ready to go back--not sure if it is the back to school time and all my friends being at school and not able to "play" with us anymore, but I don't think I am cut out to be a SAHM.  Hope it works for you!

  • Part of me would love to be a SAHM but another part, not so much.

The thing is, I don't LOVE my job and am not passionate about it (but I love and am "passionate" about my daughter) so it's hard to imagine choosing it over her.  If I was like DH and really loved what I did, I think it would be an easier decision.  Day care is also an issue - - in that there aren't any - - so we'll have to go the nanny route which nearly makes me working at all pointless (I'll take home just barely over what we pay for child care).

At the end of the day I decided it this way - I'd like to go back PT and give it until March (that's when our annual bonus is paid out).  If I hate it, I can quite then and be a SAHM then or look for a different PT job.  If it works out, great, because my benefits are amazing and we're on my medical, I get stock options, etc etc.   At least by going back I'm giving both (working mom and SAHM) a fair shake.

It's a very hard job to leave - - and they make it attractive for a reason!

  • Good luck!  I know that it must be a very difficult decision and conversation to have.  If you are able to go PT, I would be very clear about expectations (yours and theirs) and effect on advancement and bonuses/options (maybe not bonuses/options in the first conversation but before you do start PT work).

A lot of women I know (granted, most are lawyers) go PT so in theory they are working reduced hours and the pay drops, but the expectations never really decrease so they end up working almost as much as before for less pay.

Oh I am taking every ounce of leave I can :)  I am out, for sure, through October.  I am tacking on vacation so probably out a week or two in November also - not sure.  Kind of depends on what my boss wants - if he lets me do PT but wants me Nov 1, it'll be a bargaining chip :)

  • Oh oh! If you decide to leave, you can just tell your boss that you already have a replacement and I'll move up there and do your job! :-)

Hehe-nonetheless-those conversations are always tense, so I completely empathize.  I'm hoping to have an opportunity to teach as an adjunct somewhere in the spring, which means I would need to either go part time or have adjusted hours to make it work, and I'm already dreading that conversation!  I will cross my fingers for you!  Would your job allow you to work from home if you had the appropriate home office/technology at all?

Very good point!  Thankfully working PT is sort of established at my Company (to a degree) but it's really up to the Managers if they allow it. Thankfully on my Team I already have one colleague working PT (from home, even) so she's kind of paved the way.  She's very clear that she doesn't work on her days off and it's worked well.  She logs off every day right at 5:30.

Unfortunately, b/c my small team already has someone PT I'm worried he won't let me do it.

    We shall see!

Yes, my boss works from home every Thursday, as a matter of fact.  Also, my co-worker who used to live in NYC now works part-time from her new home in WI!  She has the best gig.

I am not asking to work from home though b/c I think he's more apt to say yes if I am in the office and, also, since we have to go the nanny route I think it would be near impossible to work at home, in my tiny house, with Jane in the next room.  If I had a big house with a proper closed off office, then sure.

  • good luck!!!

  • Best of luck to you.  I don't envy you, at all.  I hate those types of conversations.
