talk to me about heart rate monitors

Why should I use one? (i.e. the gym equipment tells me my heart rate already. What is the diffrence in having my own?

What features should it have?

What brand/model do you recommend?

Re: talk to me about heart rate monitors

  • The gym equipment only tells you your HR if you continuously hold on, which you shouldn't do. Also, if you ever move away from the treadmill and get outside on on a track, spin, or weight lift for that matter, there is no equipment that can keep your HR unless you have a monitor.

Depending on what you want it to do depends on the features. I just wanted a basic HRM with a chest strap as they are more reliable, so I bought the Polar F4 on sale at Amazon. I love my Polar and have never had any problems with it.

  • Your own will give you a more accurate count of calories lost. It will constantly be reading your HR as opposed to the machines that only read it when you touch the sensors. It will also take you personal stats into account. Also, if you're anal about #'s like me, it will keep a record of your workouts. Finally, a lot of machines will read from your personal strap so you don'st have to contantly look @ your watch.I have a Polar F6 & love it.
