s/o dog food

How much do you feed your dog (and size)?

I feel like Bailey eats a lot but I don't know that his poop is abnormal.  I haven't convinced Chris to try something "healthier" yet though due to the cost.

Re: s/o dog food

  • Hunter eats a cup and a 1/2 twice a day.  We were giving him 2 cups twice a day but he gained 15 lbs in 6 months so we cut him back.  He's 75 lbs.

His vet gave us how many calories he should intake a day but now I can't remember what it was.  I used that to help him lose weight.

  • We feed our 25-27 pound jack russell/pug between 1/2-3/4 cup 2x a day. We used to feed her about 1 cup 2x a day but our vet said to reduce it to 1/2 cup. She is always scratching at her bowl though and it makes me sad! She's a bit on the plump size but she is part pug and actually hasn't lost any weight since we started feeding her less about a year ago.

  • Simon is 65 lbs; he gets around 3 c/day. We also give him about an inch of a large food roll.  When he's super active (daycare, longer walks) we give him up to 4 cups. He's all muscle.

  • Simon is 20ish lbs (jack russell/ schnauzer? mix) and if he eats both meals, it's probably 3/4 cup two times a day.... I honestly have no idea how much it is because I use a scoop or his bowl. His new food is smaller kernals than his old stuff so I haven't figured out how much he eats. He now actually eats his food since he likes it... and he rarely gains weight-- he is a perfect weight-- but will lose weight really quick when sick.
  • Zeus (~9lbs) and Roxy (~7.5lbs) each get 1/3c twice a day...which is what's recommended on the back of their food bag. If they're getting a little thin I'll give them a heaping 1/3c scoop...if they're getting a little heavy I'll give them a little less.

My mom has 65lb (could stand to lose maybe 10lbs) Norwegian Elkhound and he eats the same amount of a different food.

  • OK...I have been feeling guilty because the vet told me she feeds her dogs Purina One (which is not considered "best" by the pet food nutrition sites) and that's what we use. Bailey is 42 lbs and gets 2-3 cups of food (and a PB kong) depending on his activity level.  He's all muscle and we do dog park, day care, 2-3 mile runs, etc at least 5 days a week (one of them!). I guess that sounds on track and I shouldn't worry too much about his nutrition at this point. If he starts eating his poop I'll reconsider Stick out tongue
  • Jack-92lb Black Lab 4years old- 2 cups of food 2Xday (we also do carrots as treats, and maybe 2-3 small wellness treat biscuits)

Charlie-61 lb blak lab 10 months 1.5 cups of dry food 1 6oz can of wet puppy wellness food 2X day. (charlie is on a weight gaining thing as he is skinny) he's really tall. Also carrots and small wellness treats.

We are feeling guilty because we realized Simon didn't like his food but we just thouht he was ridiculous... until we changed his food and he actually likes it... so we've been torturing him for almost 2 years with something that he refused to eat until he was starving.

  • not to be icky, but their poop should be solid, and also they shouldn't be straining to go. Our dogs go 2X day usually and it's very solid and quick. On their previous food (wysong) they weren't so great. Jack has a senstive tummy so the grain free Wellness Ocean Formula  (which he's on now) was a perfect fit for us. Also your dog should eat less when they have a higher quality food.

  • Ty is about 60 lbs, he gets 4c total for the day, which is the amount for a 70lb dog according to the bag of food. We bumped it up since he is kinda skinny and the vet said he could afford to gain a few pounds.
  • yeah, Bailey is the most regular pooper - after our morning walk, and about an hour after dinner. I've never seen any issues with it except when he was sick, so that is good I guess. Maybe I'll run it by the vet next time we go though.  He'll pretty much eat anything so that's not an issue :)
  • 3/4 cup 2x per day for Lily (26 lbs) and Tomas (31 lbs- he is slightly over weight)

  • Merlin is 36lbs and he gets 1 Cup twice a day. We have been on search for the right food for him because he has a super sensitive stomach. We think he has a grain allergy so right now he is on Natures Recipe Fish and Sweet Potato. But he has been turning his nose up to eating recently so we might try to switch him to the Wellness Ocean formula.

  • We feed Oscar 1 1/2 cups of food per day.  He eats the PetSmart Authority Brand, chicken flavored, small bites.  He weighs about 33 lbs, goes on .75 mile walks 2-3 times a week in the winter (5-6 in summer) and maintains his weight very well.

Corgis are prone to overeating and gaining weight easily which causes them a lot of back and arthritis issues as they age (due to their long stature), so we're really careful of that.
