Animal lovers: Protect Phila Animal Welfare Society

Mr erbur and I rescued our dear dog, Julia, from the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).  They are supported by an energetic group of employees and endless volunteers that are dedicated to saving the lives of unwanted animals and strays.  This organization is at risk and I am asking everyone I know to sign this petition at the PAWS site:

It is especially important for my Philadelphia Nesties to contact Mayor Nutter and their Council Member about this.  I do pay taxes and support the businesses of Philadelphia by working here every day, but since I do not reside here, my opinions carry far less weight!

Here's some background:
On September 17, the Health Department issued an open bid (RFP) for the animal control contract.

The request for a new vendor explicitly defines animal control responsibilities as "accepting and humanely disposing of up to 30,000 unwanted pets per year." It makes no mention of efforts to save these animals' lives. This glaring omission illustrates the Health Department's indifference to the lifesaving achievements of the last three years and its position that the survival of the pets we love is of no concern.

The RFP talks about animal "control," not "care," and has language about "disposal" of animals, rather than about lifesaving and adoption.

The absence of "care" makes it seem like a death sentence for innocent animals.

The RFP specifies a work force of 40. PACCA has 60-plus and is understaffed, in my opinion. How can a proper job be done with one-third fewer workers?

Julia Dog thanks you!!!!!
