• From the Inquirer.

If tonight's presidential debate takes place, an Irish bar in Center City will be in the limelight, hosting Gov. Sarah Palin at a pre-debate party.

The Irish Pub, 2007 Walnut St., will open its doors at 5 p.m. to receive ticketed guests for the private function.

Paul Lindsay, the McCain campaign's spokesman, declined to release any details about tonight's event, or why the Irish Pub had been picked to host the Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee. All Lindsay would say was that Palin, who landed in Philadelphia yesterday, was here to do some preparation for her own debate against Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr.

But Mark O'Connor, one of the pub's three owners, said the McCain campaign told pub managers to expect 400 people, a number he said would fit in the tavern's five rooms.

The Secret Service has been in to make plans for security measures, O'Connor said.

Palin is expected to arrive at the pub between 7 and 7:30 tonight and "cruise around," greeting people, O'Connor said. There's no special food or drink; it's just the pub's usual offerings.

Palin's expected to leave around 8:30 p.m., as the party ends, O'Connor said. The pub will reopen to the public at 9 p.m., the debate's scheduled start time.

On Wednesday night, O'Connor said he'd been told the likelihood of the presidential debate's being held was "iffy," but that changed 24 hours later.

As of yesterday, O'Connor said, "I'm pretty confident it will go forward."

rum here:  whatever I may think about Palin, isn't the crappy ol Irish pub a bad place? i don't care who the politico is, but i just find it a weird place. dirty tap lines and all.

Hi Francey!
• I'd go if I could get a ticket.  I would really like to see her in person, although I doubt if I were actually there that I'd be able to get that close.

I talked to my bar pal who went to the McCain rally the other day, and he said that while the speech was very much akin to the Convention speech, being in the presence of the candidates is something to experience.

• lol, what makes the irish pub a bad place?  This is the good one, the one at 12th (?) & Walnut sucks

I had many good times at the pub

eagles - didn't you have those good times when you were 21?

I always pegged it for a step up from a frat house and nothing more. no?

imho, it is. there's a funny comment on philly.com in response to the article-basically about how palin will be hanging out with guys in striped shirts drinking lager from a pitcher.

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
• It's definitely not a place that I have been lately, but I would not be opposed to going there for a few.  In the past I have always seen a pretty diversely aged crowd there, but as I said - haven't been lately

It's not McFadden's or Finnigan's Wake, for sure

• we're supposed to be going out around there tonight at about 8.....maybe i'll take the camera

and indeed, i echo beth - i would totally go.  i would go to anything mccain / palin if given the chance - the opportunity would be welcomed.

Hi Francey!
• Mel, that comment was exactly what I thought.  I picture rugby shirts (I am dating myself) and stuck up first year out of college frat guys.  That's always been my experience at Irish Pub at least.

I think a place like Triumph would have been a better choice, but regardless.  I agree, I would go if given the opportunity.

• DH's company party moved over there for the "after party" this winter.  All I know is that the stairs to get down to the bathroom became very dangerous when I was trashed and in a full length gown. lol!
• 400 peeps is a tall order!  fo sho!

so, in that light, locations are limited. (note - no one at the Union League wanted to host it? )

Hi Francey!
• I am sure they choose it because it is so big, I doubt most bars in the city could host that many people.

And I can't stand beer from a dirty tap line and truth be told tap lines are not covered under any health code. How gross is that.

• i'm meant to be at rumbar tonight at around 8.  ITS RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO IRISH PUB.

so, me thinks i am changing the location.  not because of palin, but rather because of crowds etc.  oh, shoot.

Hi Francey!
• If people can have nice weddings at Finnigan's Wake I have no doubt the Irish Pub is capable of hosting a decent political event

Union League and places like that have been booked over a year out for weddings

• Its friday night, Eagles!

honestly - my commentary about the I Pub is not reflective on Palin or the campaign. I'm just saying that it strikes me as an odd place.  tis all.

Hi Francey!
• An ex and I use to frequent the Bards on 20th and walnut.  Is that place still around?  I only ask b/c I know it was an irish pub and all of this talk of Irish pubs got me thinking....
