Be very careful in Swiss groceries

The horse meat is located right next to the beef Sad

Re: Be very careful in Swiss groceries

  • Did you accidentally buy horse meat? I don't know why, but it grosses me out that they sell that in Switzerland.

  • I didn't buy it.  We were away on a ski holiday a couple of cantons away and noticed that horse steaks were on pretty much every menu.  I then noticed them in my grocery when I got back today.  I've never noticed it before, but then again I've never been looking for it before.

I am more than a little weirded out that horse meat is common here.   We're in Western Europe, not Kazakhstan.

  • ewwww

I avoid the kangaroo meat in the grocery store here too - creepy

  • Yea, that is gross.  I am not very experimental in the meat department, I like to stick with the basics, chicken, beef and pork.

  • Yeah, it's here too. But apparently it's not highly popular because the place they have it in the store, while right next to the pork, is around a corner and kinda hidden away.

Some people might be surprised, but it's sold in the US too. Just not everywhere, and obviously not that common.

I thought it was illegal to slaughter horses for meat in most of the US?

Kangaroo meat is delicious! I wouldn't know how to cook it, but when I had it in NYC, it was amazing.

  • They had kangaroo on the menu when I was in Vienna.  My high school mascot was the Kangaroo, so it would be sacrilegious to eat it.  Not to mention gross.

In Italy there is a word, bresaola I think, which is a type of meat offered in many restaurants.  It can be either beef OR horse tho.  Got to be careful!!!
