Yesterday (I think it was yesterday), you mentioned something about Geico Short Term Disability and how it needs to be active for 10 months before you can use it.

A co-worker was actually talking about signing up for that to use during her maternity leave. Is that what your plan was, or was it for something else?

I think it's a good idea, but I don't know all the info on it. Is the 10 month info on their website somewhere? I'd like to pass it along to her, as well as look into for myself.

Re: MB

  • It was AFLAC, but yeah, that's what we're looking into because their short-term disability included matenrity leave.

It was on pamplets we received from our rep through my office, but it said, depending on how much one made you would get back $XXX-amount for 6 weeks if delivery was natural, 8 weeks if there was a C-section.  But the policy needed to be active for 10 months prior to delivery or else you're inelligible... I'll check when I get home for more specs.

I haven't checked the website recently, but I think they keep it broad so that their reps can do the work...

  • Sorry, I meant AFLAC, there was just a Geico commercial on the radio.. lol

Do they have just a 'short-term disability' policy? Or do you have to purchase a whole life insurance policy to get it?

  • lol Geico... that stupid gecko

But yes, there is a special Short Term Disability plan you can get - it's really a la carte with AFLAC.  You dont need to get one particular plan to get another, and each plan has its own tiers, depending on how much you want to pay, etc...

  • Awesome, thanks for the info!

My co-worker wants to get it, but she had no idea about the 10 month thing. She's planning on TTC asap after the new year, but she was going to wait to sign up for the policy. Good thing you happened to mention something!

  • Yes   Cool

And this makes me want to look into it more now too... Chris and I keep talking about it, but now we just have to do it... yay motivation!

  • Smart girls. I reaaaally wish I would have had a short-term disability plan in place before I got pregnant. But, fortunately, we will get the bigass tax return this year since we bought the house, so our plan is to put back enough to cover my unpaid leave.
  • Wow. I didn't realize that most employers didn't offer this as a benefit. We have company paid short term disability starting after 5 days of being under the doctors care for any reason.

  • We have life and health insurance, but since we're such a small company, they only offer Short-Term through AFLAC.  I know DH's company offer's short-term, but it isnt good for spouses.  I have no idea for maternity leave, but I know that none of it beyond vacation days will be paid.

Total crap!  I wasn't aware most employers didn't offer STD (haha that sounds lovely) either, but it sucks you have it and it doesn't cover maternity leave.  They just expect you to take it unpaid or have a separate STD policy?  Ouch.  Granted, our STD accumulates with each year we're at the company.  If I got pregnant and had a baby in 2010, I'd only get 6 weeks of paid maternity, so I'd still have to take some unpaid or use vacation/sick time instead.  You get 2 weeks for every year up to a certain limit.

We're allowed to take up to 12 weeks maternity leave (state law I believe), but it's completely unpaid. We can use our accumulated vacation time if we want to get paid.

Our companys std policy only covers up to 60% of your pay for up to 12 weeks - but is only valid for personal injury (on & off job) or illness. Pregnancy & Maternity not included.

Our company has the same thing. It's an optional thing. I really wish I would have signed up for it! Damns!
