For those on BCP...

Does anyone take Yasmin?  If not, what pill do you take?  I'm considering some alternatives.  I've been on Yasmin for 7 years (and Alesse for 3 years before that) and have a few of the weird symptoms they keep talking about on those lawsuit commercials (but I don't think mine are serious and I definitely don't plan to sue.) I do think it might be a good thing to try an alternative for the next 7 or 8 months until I'm more or less ready to TTC.

I've tried the Patch and NuvaRing and didn't like either and I'm not an IUD candidate.

I would just go off the pill entirely this weekend when my pack is up, but I'll be honest, when you're married, condoms are just no fun at all, so we don't really want to use those either.

I wish they had a birth control pill for dudes.  H told me he'd take it.

Re: For those on BCP...

  • I'm on Loestrin24. Other than the fact that I've been spotting for 2 weeks I have no complaints about it.

I'd love to stop taking the pill too, but we're not TTC soon and DH isn't going back to condoms either. I'm all for the man bcp though. That would be great!

  • I've been on Trinessa for 2 months now before that I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen (I think?)

Both have worked great for me with no side effects

  • I used to take Yasmin, but then I switched to a lower dosage because I thought we would be TTC much sooner.  I'll probably go back on Yasmin, soon.  Low dose pills do nothing for me.  I need a high dosage for them to actually be effective for my body (according to my dr).  Right now I take Lo...something.  It only gives 4 sugar pills for your period.  I've been on it for 2 months and missed my period both, so I'm unimpressed.

Oooh, I used to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, and I loved it so much.  I didn't know they made a high dose version of it.  I want that!

  • I was on Yaz (same as Yasmin, just a lower dose) and I HATED IT.  When I went to my doctor before the wedding, she suggested I just get off everything all together since we were eventually be TTC... that way my body can adjust to not being on BCP, and it won't get screwed up by being on something new...

We haven't been using condoms since the HM, thus the "whatever happens, happens" phase, but now that we're looking into things more realistically, especially Short-Term Disability, we need to make sure we plan accordingly and don't screw it up- for example, AFLAC needs to be active 10 months out from the date of delivery, stuff like that.  Because of this, we're going to start using condoms again just until we're in a place where we want to be to start being not careful again.

Really, it's not that big of a deal for DH - getting some with a condom is better than not getting anything, right? ;)  Plus, he knows how screwed up my system got on Yaz, and will take the hornier MB sans pills any day!

  • I am on Nuva Ring, but was just told that I need to switch to the pill so we can TTC in the next year. I guess my doc thinks it takes longer to work out of the system. I would love some feedback as well. It has been years since I was on any pill so I assume they are all quite different.

    Same difference - Tri-Sprintec is just the generic.  I've been on both, until my insurance stopped covering it. -_-;;

DH has given me two months to try and figure out how to get my sex drive back.  We were blaming stress and the wedding, but it still isn't here.  If it's still a no show after two months of trying a few other things, then we're switching from BCP to condoms.

  • I was on Desogen for 3 years but recently went off before the wedding because I didnt like the way I felt while on it ( I never wanted sex AT ALL, it got pretty bad) so we agreed for me to get off it and Oh My Word it was like a whole new me! lol

  • I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo and it made me so emotionally numb.  I've been taking Lo-Ovral for a really long time and i really like it!

  • MB, that's a good point about being, well, more in the mood.  Maybe I wouldn't mind condoms as much if I were off the pill, because I do think it affects me a little bit there.  At the same time, I think I'd be super paranoid one would break or something.

Some of you are on pills I've never even heard of.  I wonder how MDs/CNPs, etc decide what to prescribe when there are so many out there.  I'm going to ask my doc about OrthoCylen  (the monophasic one--I've never taken a triphasic pill) and some of the ones you guys have mentioned and see what she thinks.  It's a starting point at least.

That's the generic. I take Sprintec currently, which is the generic of Ortho-Cyclen. Same thing (roughly)

Edit: Never mind. I didn't read to the end.

  • I was on Ovcon 35 and then the nuvaring. I love the Ovcon but was messy with taking it so I switched to the nuvaring and now i'm not on anything. My sex drive has increased a lot from what it was on BC. I liked knowing to the day when my period was coming and how clear my skin was but I don't miss it at all otherwise.

Ever since I went off BCP, my drive came back and my mood has chanegd for the better.  I was such a cranky b*tch before.  Although, I did go off BCP once before and nothing changed but we were also living with my parents which was so stressful.

When I started BCP, I started with something I can't remember, but it was too much for me and caused me to have AF for 2 weeks.  I switched to Ortho Tricyclen Lo and that was nice.  I used NuvaRing after since I had a hard time consistently taking the pill on time.  Before I went off BCP recently, I tried Ortho again but it gave me bad headaches.

  • I'm on Yasmin (well, Ocella, the generic). I've been on it for 4 or 5 years. It's not completely perfect for me- I'm supposed to be on a 2 month cycle, but well, my body kind of ignores that and AF comes when I'm still on the active pills (and if I keep taking them, she comes again on the placebo week- yeah, it sucks). I was going to switch to something with more progesterone, but those are the ones that usually cause weight gain, and 12 months before the wedding, that was NOT an option.

I haven't paid attention to the commercials, so I'm not sure what side effects the lawsuits are about. I don't think I've had any side effects, but I've definitely had benefits- no more PMS, cramps are so much less that I can usually just take OTC drugs (instead of my prescription painkillers) to make them bearable, and I'm not anemic anymore. TBH, I'm terrified of going off BC. DH has promised he'll try to get me KU asap after I stop taking the BC, and hopefully growing a baby will snap some sense into my uterus (or at least, women in my family tell me it did for them).

I spent the morning discussing this in relation to my anemia with my dermatologist (it only seems random), so I'm being pretty thinky about all my pills today.

  • What about charting to prevent instead of conceive? Thats what I am looking into b/c I was on Seasonique (the 3 month pill then a cycle) and my Dr told me to stop taking them last week when my pack ended b/c we are going to try to conceive around May. She said it was so that it would give my body time to adjust and get all the BC out. I also don't care for condoms but don't want to be KU until around the middle of the year at the earliest so thats why I am looking into this option. I haven't figured much out yet though the whole charting thing is confusing to me. GL

I highly recommend reading TCOYF if you're thinking about going about charting -- be it for TTC or TTA.  I'm still in the middle of reading it myself and there is so much I just didn't know.... honestly, a good read for any woman TTC etc who just wants good info about how her body works.
