Odd or Weird Christmas gifts?

Did anyone get any odd, weird, or lame Christmas gifts this year?

I got full face make-up and perfume from my mother-in-law. Personally, I would never get someone full face make-up (foundation, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.) because 1) I might not get the correct color for their skin tone, and 2) they may not wear make-up.  I don't wear make-up often.  Sometimes some eyeshadow, liner, and mascara, but rarely anything else (like the only time I have was at my wedding 2 years ago). She always wears full make-up, like would never leave the house without all of it on. And I NEVER wear perfume (it actually smells like her. Husband said to only wear it when I was def not wanting any action! lol.)

Now, I love her to death. I know she probably didn't mean anything by it, but still it's weird.

Re: Odd or Weird Christmas gifts?

  • Perhaps she took the whole adage about "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" backwards....maybe she thought that because you two are really close and if you share similar tastes in other things...you might share the same taste in makeup.

Also my mom always told me that the trick to makeup is to make it look like you're not wearing any!  Perhaps she feels that you do wear makeup (like she does) but yours is more natural?

As for the perfume, "accidently" drop it in the sink when the water is running to flush down the smell!  :)

  • I got a can of hot chocolate mix (from TJ Maxx) and a 3 pack tins of teas (also from TJ Maxx)- from my MIL. Kinda generic and weird at the same time. MIL knows I am not a coffee drinker, so I guess she assumes I drink hot chocolate and tea... :o)
  • Both came from my ILs, who have a tendency to spoil everyone else and give me "interesting" things... I feel badly & ungrateful, but it is something I deal with every year & both are going to Goodwill.

Gift #1 is the "Slicer Plus" - which looks like a cross between a knife and a pair of garden shears with a mini cutting board thrown in. I guess it is for people who don't like to use a real knife when they chop veggies? Odd gift as I do not do any of the cooking - DH does. I know MIL thinks that is odd/weird, so maybe this is her way of getting me in the kitchen?

Gift #2 is called a "copper wind spinner" according to the box. It is made of spiraled, distressed copper, with a bunch of blue & green beads in the middle and chains hanging off of both ends. I'm not sure what you do with it, but I assume it is meant to be decorative and you hang it? Its actually quite heavy considering its size. Odd...

I read this as "copper wine spinner". LOL

I think I know what this is, DH and I have one. It's used kind of like a windchime (sound-free, of course). Just a knick-knack to look pretty, I'd guess.

  • None since my MIL died. OMG could she give a strange gift. Some years DH and I would open them and not be sure which horror was meant for which one of us. She had a soft spot for crafts being sold by untalented new school teachers paying down their student loans.

I can sew to nearly courture standards, so why she thought I'd need a XXXL sweatshirt with cut out kittens glued with on with glitter puffy paint is beyond me.

  • My hubbys Grandparents got me a few things, but one of them was strange.  I think it is suppose to be a purse, but it looks like a "dress-up" purse you would buy for a 4 year old.  Its maybe 4x6 in size, green fake leather, has a bunch of what look to be credit card pockets on the front but they are about half the size of a real credit card, and the handles are two one inch diameter metal rings.  I am not sure what you put in it or how you carry it, especially since there is no zipper or buttons for it to actually close. I am going to a NYE party where they have a white elephant bad gift exchange, I may be taking it there :)

I have to say, they are the sweetest people and showered me with gifts, just not necessarily stuff I would use :)

  • My H and I each got ponchos from my parents....I was kind of dumbfounded, considering we had just opened a $100 gift card to Ruth's Chris from my 16 year old sister (obviously bought by my parents).  Now, I know my dad lost his job recently, but ponchos? Really?  My parents must have thought the looks on our faces were hilarious, because they were like well, we got them for your trip, isn't it the rainy season in Jamaica? Uh, no, Dad, it's not... (We leave Jan. 1 for vacation).  They started laughing at us and told us to open our next present, which were tickets to Blue Man Group, main floor, hence the need for the ponchos!  So, once we got the WHOLE gift, totally not weird or odd, but to just open ponchos...well, totally weird!  It was a great gift, and I'm so excited to go see BMG!
  • my MIL crocheted me a sweater with arms that were too long.  IT will be added to the pile of stuff I wont wear that she makes us.

  • My mom wrapped up two little boxes of Swedish Fish and put them in a larger box with a beautiful pair of earrings.  I love Swedish Fish, but it was odd the way they were packaged.

  • SIL gives me the same gift every year, just different colors (this is the third year running).  This year: two colors that I NEVER wear: orange and purple.  Hhhhmmm...

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • My husband's parents gave him two wooden ducks.  We don't have a pond and certainly aren't the type of people with stuff from the taxidermist lying around...
  • My mom gave me really cute pink fluffy slippers, but in a child's size 2.  She knew they were a 2.  She saw them in size 1, 2, and 3, and assumed that meant adults small, medium, and large.

  • nothing really odd for me.. although i noticed i received lesser gifts than last year. LOL. but still, had a great Christmas!

  • My MIL got me baking soda! To be fair it came int this neat little shaker container for baking soda. I saw one in her kitchen and was like the baking soda in my store does not come like that I want one.

What was funny was the look on my DH's face. At first he looked horrified that his mother would give me such a thing then it changed to confusion when he saw a was truly excited over it lol.

  • in addition to getting me the gifts i asked for DH got me sex toys.
  • I received a broom from the IL's.  Not sure what they were trying to say with that...........H got four sets of pajamas from his parents.........
  • DH's grandmother got his sister and I the same "antique pickle dish" We both died of hysterical laughter. Grandmother is the type who demands what is on her wish list, but cleans out her house and gives you her old junk. The dishes were not antiques, but either way... We are making a large donation to Good Will after the new year so her gift will help contribute to that... She does this every year. Poor SS got a handheld electronic game from the 80's that was broken for his birthday one year... Sadest part about that is it was actually DH's game when he went to her house when he was a kid...

    Anniversary
  • Apparently my MIL got me a huge roaster for things such as ham, turkey.  Which isn't so weird but Dh and I are both vegetarians!  She showed it to DH right after she bought it and thankfully he told her I would never use it so she took it back.  DH told me because he thought it was hilarious.
