Animal questions... And leaving tomorrow to apt hunt!:D

The Hubs and I leave tomorrow for Germany for a week, during which, we will find an apartment. I am not looking forward to the long plane ride but I am very excited otherwise.

Has anyone moved with pets? I was told to not get a microchip until I get there because the ones in the US read differently and the EU machines might not pick them up. Then when I was reading over the form I am taking to the vet to have filled out, it says they must be microchiped in order to go through customs. Does anyone know which one is right?

Also the only vaccine that I can see that is required by Germany is the rabies vaccine. Am I missing something? That seems too simple.

TIA?

  • I don?t know about the microchipping in the US, but the microchipping in Germany is done with Tasso chips (maybe you can find some info about them) and it was about 40 Euros to have our dog chipped. The vaccines that our dog got were: Leptospirose, parvo, kennel cough, rabies and two others I can?t remember. But we got our dog here in Germany. Lane should know about the chipping or not chipping and shots.

  • My pup was microchipped in the US long before we knew we were moving here. To be honest when we came through customs no one was even there to check us- but we had him as carry on. We did have to get a second microchip here. We warned our friends and they were able to order the Tasso microchip and have it shipped to the US and their vet used it, so maybe see if you can do that?
  • You are missing something: the microchip. They need it BEFORE you go, as part of the paperwork. You can kind the information and bilingual form you need here on the USDA APHIS website. Some microchips are difference, but most work as long as they meet ISO standards. One of my dogs has 'Home Again' and one has '24 Pet Watch' with both use avid chips (that's a type of chip) and they scanned perfectly when I arrived overseas both times.
  • I asked my vet to order me a microchip that would work in the EU.  It took a little while, but wasn't a huge deal.  My cat went into the UK on the pet passport scheme, but the UK is very strict, no idea how difficult it would be in Germany.
  • I agree it is much more difficult for the UK, which is where we moved our cats, and our microchips from the US worked there so I am sure they would work in Germany.

Thanks for the info. I actually have that form, so that I what I will go from. I just talked to MH and he said that his work has a special pet relocation company that will work with us to get the paper work done. So hopefully since they specialize in moving pets they will know what to do.

I am just nervous about the order. It seems on that form that they need the chip before the rabies vaccine, in order to prove the identity of the pet. I just recently had them all updated on their rabies and I am worried I will have to do it again or wait a while because they can't do it so soon again. I can't imagine 2 rabies vaccinations so close together is good. Maybe if I just make sure to take them all to the same vets that did their shots they can confirm the identity? Now I am just thinking out loud.

Thank you all for your help.?

  • I don't have any advice on relocating pets but just wanted to say good luck finding a great apartment in Germany and safe travels pandi!  Let us know how your trip went.

    Thanks, Mavjen :D

Look at your shiny new ticker. I like it. ?

  • I'm having this SAME issue with my cat!  I know for the UK, they have to be microchipped BEFORE they get their rabies vaccine, but the same isn't true for the Netherlands.  I also got a "Home Again" chip in my cat and that is just fine for the Netherlands (says so on the paperwork, at least).  Hopefully the pet relocation place will steer you in the right direction.

I'm just scared my cat is going to freak out on the plane...I'm more nervous for her than anything (and I HATE flying).

    Good luck!!!!

Thanks. Same to you, if you need anyone to talk to. I know you are much more experienced there than I will be but I am a good listener. :D

?I will be in Erlangen, about 20 minutes outside of Nurmberg.?

  • We actually aren't insanely far from one another with the great ICE trains...our dogs should have a meeting
  • I knew we weren't too far from Frankfurt, but I didn't know the exact distances. We are right about in the middle of Frankfurt and Munich as I understand it.?

I would love to have a GTG. We will have to set it up once I get there. ?
