F/U Paris or Amsterdam?

We have 4 full days.

I've been to Paris once, about 10 years ago, on a trip with French Club in high school.  DH has never been.

Neither of us has been to Amsterdam.

Re: F/U Paris or Amsterdam?

  • Disclaimer - I don't like Paris and know I'm in the minority.  With that in mind, I would choose Amsterdam over Paris.  Amsterdam is gorgeous.  Something about the red brick buildings and canals.

  • I loooove Paris! So I would choose Paris.  But Amsterdam is a beautiful city too.

I guess thats not much help...

One thought is the size of Paris and all of the things to see there.  4 days isnt a lot of time.  Amsterdam could be digested in 4 days without feeling crazy. Whereas you would really have to pick and choose what you wanted to see in Paris if you only have four days. Maybe Paris is better when you have more time?

  • i like both cities but i think i'd choose amsterdam since neither of you has been yet.?

  • I freaking love Amsterdam.  I've been there four times.  It's gorgeous and fun.

And yes, you can do a lot of it in 4 days whereas you'd be hard pressed in Paris.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • I am on the Amsterdam bandwagon. We spent 5 days there when we went in September and the 5th day we went and saw somethings for a 2nd time because we had nothing else left that we were dying to see. And we spent the 5th day suvenier shopping as well. It would be so easy to see the whole city in 4 days.

Also, I'm a big fan of going somewhere neither of us have been to we can experience it together for the first time.

  • I've been to both and would def. go back to Amsterdam. It's beautiful, the people are friendly, there is tons of food and so much to do.
  • i would pick amsterdam over paris. i've never been to amsterdam, but i have been to paris, and while it was okay...i'm not dying to go back either.
  • I'm going to London and Paris for the first time next year, and after that Amsterdam will be the top of my list.

In your situation I would do Amsterdam since neither of you has been, since you can easily do it in 4 days, AND you can easily take a day trip to Brussels or Bruge and get to say you went to another country as well!

BTW, I have a good friend who's been to Europe a few times and has been to Amsterdam 3 times. He says it's his favorite city.

  • I think you could see quite a bit of Paris with 4 full days actually.  Certainly not EVERYTHING, but it is a fair amount of time to have there as long as you prioritize what is important to you.  I was just in Amsterdam a few months ago and had 2.5 days there - I felt that was enough time, but I'm also not a huge museum person so I didn't spend much time at the museums there.

Honestly, you really can't go wrong with either, so I'd just go wherever has the cheaper flight :)

  • I love both cities but have considered returning to AMS not necessarily Paris. We had more fun in AMS..we partied a lot and enjoyed the canals and cathedrals. Gorgeous city. You can't go wrong with either but since u all have never been and because we enjoyed it so much, my rec would be for AMS!
  • Paris - I think 4 days is enough and it's such a romantic place.

  • We did both this year. We had been to Paris before. HATED Amsterdam. Absolutely hated everything about it. It was dirty, trashy and overall nasty. We couldn't understand why anyone who wasn't on a college summer trip would want to go there. The canals had trash floating in them. The park was full of trash on the ground, in the ponds, etc. Besides a couple good museums it was a waste of time. The shopping districts were things I could find in my local mall.

Needless to say, I'd pick Paris.

This....I absolutely adore Paris, but 4 days would feel rushed....Amsterdam is much more manageable in 4 days.
