I'm trying to research some CSAs to join next year, and I just can't figure out which one to really look into! Did anyone join a CSA this year, and what was your experience like? (7river, you used Homestead right?) Will you join them again?

I have found a list of CSAs on the Natural Living Des Moines page but wondering what ones I'm missing...

Re: CSAs

  • Yes we joined the Homestead. We love it because its non-profit, and obviously, because its so close. Nora and I try to go once a month or so to volunteer and help with things like potting, weeding, etc.

I also love that we get such a HUGE variety. I have tried so many new veggies this year (and liked them!), plus unlike a lot of CSAs we actually get a reasonable amount of fruit -- so far this year we've gotten strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and I know blueberries and apples are coming.

The Homestead also happens to be one of the only CSAs in the metro that does not have a waiting list...if you do decide to go elsewhere, I would recommend signing up soon or you may not get a share for a year or 2.

  • How many weeks does the share include?
  • Depends on the weather, but they will keep giving you food as long as the farm is producing. They estimate 18-22 weeks as an average.
