Keeping kids off your lawn?

We live on a corner and kids are constantly running not only across our lawn but across our driveway. It is getting ridiculous. We have been trying to bring our lawn back to life and they spend so much time running all over it. They aren't little kids either, they are probably between the ages of 12-14.

We may have to do some landscaping to make it so they can't cut across the lawn but I honestly think that will just make them cut across even closer to our house.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Keeping kids off your lawn?

  • I say run out there waving your broom and wearing a housecoat/ shower cap screaming "Get off my lawn you rotten kids!"

    lol... I am trying to teach K to stay off of people's lawns when we go for walks. I tell her if she walks on their grass they will come out of their house and yell at her to get off. It's not working that well :)

    I hope they stay off your lawn, I can't believe they are older kids! So rude!

  • Put in a hedge! Kids are ignorant.

  • I was going to suggest a hedge as well.  Or a corner flowerbed with roses (and other plants with thorns)

    You could sit on your front step with the hose turned to full blast ready to spray them when they run by if it's around the same time every day.  That's free.

    DH is always stepping on the neighbor's corner piece of grass.  I get mad at him and he just shrugs.  So I told the neighbor if she sprays him to yell first so I can get out of the way.

  • You can get this thing from Lee Valley that sprays deer and crows in the face with?citronella?to stop them from coming into their garden. ?Maybe that would help?

    This one made me LOL.

  • So many good ideas!!!

    I don't think landscaping will work (we already have some and it does not deter them). These kids just do not care. Our driveway is blocked off because we just had it poured and with all the rain we have not been able to cure and seal it. They don't care that it is roped off and still ride their bikes over it.

    They also were trying to knock down the stop sign that is on the corner of our lawn tonight. Joe went to say something to them and their response was "It is just a stop sign"

  • Can you find out where they live?  I bet the police would disagree it's "just" a stop sign.  The city too.
  • I don't think it will stop unless you have a hedge or fence running around the whole lot, or from the corner all the way to the house.

    ?

    Also, I saw your mini-me today. ?Do you have any cousins/nieces about age 11 in my area? ?

    Left, Right
  • Ok Sammy...that suggestion made me almost spit my ice cream out.  Sounds like it may be your best bet (and I am picturing it happening to my most hated students....because they would be the ones to do that...I would pay for that...maybe I should get one for my classroom!)
  • Our neighbour is a cop so hopefully they will do it again when he is around.

    We do have a fence up but the front bit of our property you can't have a fence (by-law) and it would look weird. A hedge would look weird too. Maybe we should cover our lawn in dog poop. Big stinky piles of dog poop.

    No nieces around that age. I have 2 that are biological and they are 2 and 1 month.

  • I have seen corner lots having a diagonal hedge.. like starting at the corner of the house towards the corner of the lot. It looks a little bit weird but it definitely serves a purpose... that house is on the corner near a school so I imagine lots of kids were cutting across the lawn.

    Ditto!  No other suggestions here, but honestly if you got it, and said it was for crows, are you breaking any laws? ;P

  • I think our lawn is a bit more complicated because we aren't a true corner lot. We are on the corner of 2 courts. So we have a huge backyard but also a huge side yard and front yard. It is really hard to explain. I would draw it out in paint and show the area where the hooligans are running across.

    sure... I'm still up... i can take a look & brainstorm if you're up for it

    Red = stop sign

    brown = fence

    purple = the rest of our property line

    green = landscaping

    blue = the path the little buggers take when running over our property

  • so there is no sidewalk directly in front of your house (in front of the driveway?) hmmm. They probably walk on your lawn instead of the road.

    Could you put landscaping along the driveway (at least the side closer to the stop sign)? If you use bushes, hibiscus trees, etc then they will maybe not cut through the driveway.. Maybe something prickly like roses LOL. Could you add another tree or bush in the "corner" where they are navigating the trees near the stop sign?

     I am not sure about the last two paths at the bottom (from the sidewalk and neighbour to the road). I imagine that's not that part that really bothers you though. The only thing I can think of is to add more landscaping and fill the whole corner but that is getting to be a lot of work/maintenance.

  • after seeing your paint rendition I think you should just put a bunch of tacks face-up in the grass.?

    lol LANDMINES!

  • Correct there is no sideway in front of our house (we live on a court). There is barely any traffic so there is no need for one.

    We can't put any landscaping in that area due to safety issues with the stop sign. But perhaps we could extend the area around the one tree and make a garden that would block them between the tree and the stop sign. I just fear that would make them run even closer to the house.

    The trend lately around here is to get rid of our lawn and replace it all with landscaping. I think those people were on to something.

    Tacks...hmmmm....tacks, spraying things for deers, piles of poop...I can see the property value increasing as we speak!

  • My Aunt has a neighbor who poor thing has this ONE corner of her lawn damaged because her neighbor(s) always drive over it!

    They have about 4 super long ?work? vans and we believe that there are over 15 adults living in the house?so first her DH put up a mini-fence right on that corner ? they ran over it! Then he put a rock ? they run over/jump the rock so a few weeks ago he put nails and this barbwire looking thing that slashed the tires of the ?first? car going in. We were outside on purpose to see the action, yes they started screaming but he (good guy) had a valid point It?s MY LAWN! I do whatever the FLIP I want on it! Then he (good guy) also mentioned that if the neighbor wanted he?d call the cops to settle it.

    {They somehow park 3 of the vans in the backyard ?hiding? and the other one up front, we know for a fact that about 11 of the men are not here legally and all work for this man ? that?s why they live at his house}

    So ? Good Luck!  Big Smile

    Why not get those thin ropes that have electric current running through them and corner off your house. I?m sure one touch and they know better for next time ? like the farmers use for horses?!

  • How annoying!!! You should set up booby traps where they fall in a hole, or trip on fishing line...then throw eggs at them when the fall. Kids are such PITA's sometimes, especially the ones where that have parents that don't give a shiit!
