Dad's 50th Birthday

My mom and I are planning a surprise 50th birthday party for my dad.  He has a good sense of humor but doesn't like being made fun of, so a roast or "Over the Hill" party wouldn't be appropriate or enjoyed.

Basically what I'm looking for are good themes that we can use.  My dad enjoys woodworking and is very proud of his Irish heritage, so ways to use either of these ideas would be great!  TIA for any help at all that you can provide!

  • I don't know about a theme but you could definitely serve Irish food and beer.  I guess I'm not feeling that creative today lol. I

  • What about doing it in the style of the year he was born? You'd have to do some research, but it could be fun...or maybe theme it to when he was a teenager so it would be kind of a blast from the past for him.

We had a surprise BBQ for my dad when he turned 50. It was so hard to keep it a secret but it worked and it was so much fun!! Good luck!

  • I think this a great idea.  You could research what it was like in the 50's in Ireland and see if anything was different than in the U.S.  You could have everyone dress in 50's attire (works for the year he was born and his 50th birthday).  Play music from the 50's.  You could even have 50's style cocktails.  Check out this website http://www.in-the-spirit.co.uk/50sCocktailHour.html it had some good info.  Good luck and have fun with this.
