Just went off BC to get pregnant!!

I just stopped taking my birth control pills because we are going to start trying to conceive. I have been taking them for over 2 years. Does anyone know how long it will take for us to get pregnant? I've heard that the longer you're on the pill, the harder it is to get prenant. Any comments?

Re: Just went off BC to get pregnant!!

  • After stopping the pill, it usually takes one or two months for a woman?s periods to return to the cycle she had before taking the pill. Once in a while, a woman may have irregular periods or no periods at all. This may go on for as long as six months after stopping. This is more likely if her periods were irregular before starting the pill.

    hope that helps.

  • Some people have told me 3 months, some a year (!!!??) - I came off BCP on 22nd May and had first AF in 5 years on 24th June (was always a 30 day cycle so not too far off) although it only lasted a couple of days. I would still start taking PNVs and chart to be on the safe side :-)

  • Coming off the pill it could take your body a couple of months to regulate or just a couple of weeks.  Everyone is different.  Most doctors will tell you to wait 2-3 months and if you don't get af at all then go in for an appt.  If you get irregular af's you'll usually just have to wait for them to become more normal.

But even if af is irregular you can chart and increase your chances of getting pg.  You'll know when you ovulate, which is what you need to know to up your chances.

You should read Taking Charge of Your Fertility  and check out fertilityfriend.com.  You can use their free charting software once you know what you are doing.

Once you know what you are doing it can take up to 1 year for a normal, healthy woman to get pg.  Doctors won't meet with you about not getting pg until after that 1 year mark (usually).  Some people get pg in 1 month, some take longer.

    Again, everyone is different.

  • I know several women who went off the the pill to ttc expecting it to take several months to "get back to normal" and got pregnant right away. Everyone is different.

     this!

  • Yup I'm just here to add that really every woman is different.  I was on the pill for 10 years.  Just went off it three months ago.  Got my period within a month and am now a 27 day cycle (instead of the 28 I used to be).  So far I've been regular every month.

Ditto.  Since you can get pregnant from missing a pill or two, then you CAN get pregnant immediately.

  • Well, I've been off BC since Dec. 2007 and I'm not pg yet.

  • Everyone is different. After reading and talking to friends about it DH and I had talked and thought this summer would be a great time to start trying. Sicne I had been on the pill for over 15 years I thought that it might take a while to get 'regular'. Well....my last pill was in January and I missed my preriod in May and thought that it was strange, but from reading I figured I was just getting regular....yeah not so much and I was already 6 weeks pg when I went to the drs. Good luck and it will happen!

  • Could be immediately, 3 months, a year, or never. ?Everyone is different.
  • My gyn said up to a year, depending on how soon your body reregulates.  My friend got pregnant the first month off, so it really depends on the person.
  • I agree, everyone IS different.  I was pregnant about a week after I stopped taking the pill thinking that it would take a few months to get preg.
  • I took BC for almost 3 years and after I went off it last June I didn't have another cycle til the end of November...

  • I agree with PP.  It could take you one cycle, it could take you a year.  Just be warned, your cycles won't necessarily be 28 days.  I've been off the pill since October and have had cycles from 29 to 36 days.  Good luck!
  • It's probably different for everyone.  I was on the pill for 12 years and got pregnant in 3 months.

Did you REALLY just ask this question?  A bunch of random internet strangers can predict this?

  • everyone is different, it might happen the first cycle off pills, or it could take your body a while to get going on it's own again. start taking your pre-natal vitamins now though!  you may also want to check out the babies on the brain board, or thebump.com.  i also agree with PP's, get the book taking charge of your fertility, and begin charting.  and congrats on TTC.  :)
  • I went off it not expecting to get pregnant right away... I was pregnant the next month.

  • Thanks for all of the advice!! :o)

My periods were always very regular, like clock work, before I went on the pill, so I'm hoping my body will resume that :o)

Oh--and we just bought our first home yesterday!!! So many exciting things happening! :o)
