For those of you with silver or silver plate flatware

Did you purchase or register for steak knives?  I am considering purchasing a silver plate set by Wallace to use for formal dinners.  It comes with a dinner knife, and only 10 steak knives are available (I need 12).  Just curious what everyone else has, and whether or not a dinner knife is suitable for all types of meats.  TIA.

I registered for extra steak knives, but to be honest, I've never used them. The regular knives work fine for most meals I serve. And usually when I make steak it's only for a few people, so we just use the steak knives that came with our knife set.
  • I haven't ever served steak at a meal where I've had out the good silver...because the silver only comes out with the china and crystal and sawing on meat doesn't jive with those for me lol

I wouldn't buy them new.  If you end up wanting them later, I've seen classic, go-with-anything steak knives very inexpensively at flea markets.

  • Ikea, baby.

If you live near one Smile  You can get a pack of 10 for like $5.  They are super cheap, but they look like just normal steak knives and work well.

  • We don't have steak knives to go with our silver.  If we serve steak for a dinner that warrants use of our silver, we will most likely just use those from our knife set.
