Vegas: Is it too hot in August?

I am surprising DH by taking him to Vegas for his bday in mid-august. The last time I was there, it was March 2004, but I was wondering if it'd be too hot to go there in August? Should we rent a car?

Re: Vegas: Is it too hot in August?

  • Las Vegas is in the desert, so it is dry heat. Most people think 90 degrees feels the same no matter where you are, but this area of the country is SO humid. In Vegas, it can be 110 degrees, and it feels like mid-80s would in Cincy. It just feels so different, it's hard to explain. I think you will be fine.

As far as renting a car, it would depend on where you're staying and what you plan to do while you're there. If you stay on the strip, most stuff is within walking distance.

  • It is going to be hot.  Probably over 100 every day.  So, you will sweat for sure.  That said, I hate cold weather - so hot doesn't bother me.

If you intend to go do Hoover Dam or anything like that, you will want to get a car.  If not, you definitely don't need one at all.

  • DH and I went in late August '04.  I'm not going to lie, it was really hot.  We still had a blast!  The best part is you can duck into a casino anytime it gets unbearable.

I wouldn't rent a car if you're staying on the Strip.

  • We went to Vegas in June, and it is pretty hot.  We walked halfway down the strip and had to go inside.  Not because of the air, but because it was so hot the heat was coming through the bottom of my shoes (teva sandals).  Although, at night it wasn't bad.

Agree with PPs, no reason for a car if you're on the strip.  If you're taking any side trips on your own (we did Zion and Bryce), renting a car is the only way to go.  There are a ton of tours you can take as well where you won't need a car.  Have fun!

  • I think the heat is subject to opinion, but my opinion is that I hate Las Vegas in August! It is sooooo hot! We have a store in Las Vegas so I have been there a few times for work in the summer and I dread it. However, that being said... my favorite season is winter!  It's very normal for the temperatures to reach 115-120 in Las Vegas.

The last time I went for leisure was at the beginning of this month and we did rent a car to drive out to the Hoover Dam and then I paid a visit to our store but any other time I have been we just walked. I personally would think it was more of a headache to drive up and down the strip than walking, even though all of the strip hotels pretty much have free valet parking.

I wouldn't let the heat be a dealbreaker though, just be prepared to be hot and stop at a lot of casino's along the strip to cool off!

  • Honestly, it's going to be hotter than hell at that time of the year!  I went last year in May and it was HOT.
  • Like pp's said, it is HOT.  We went in August 07.  We did a SW US tour where we wound up in a Vegas for a few days.  We landed in Phoenix and drove up to the Grand Canyon.  Then we drove through southern Utah (GORGEOUS!!!), and winded up in Vegas.  It was hot, but once we got to Vegas we turned the car in.  When we walked the strip, we would just go through casinos as often as possible to get out of the heat.  It's not a great time of year to be there if you want to be outside.  Even going to the pool in the morning was not comfortable.  But... if you're going to be in the casinos it's always a good time... at least for us.
