What shows were you not allowed to watch?

Re: What shows were you not allowed to watch?

  • We could watch whatever we wanted.

My parents knew that we were going to be "corrupted" one way or another. They'd rather watch shows with us and talk to us about them, than have us sneak them in without any supervision, if that makes sense. If something was upsetting or too scary, we learned to remove ourselves from the room or else change the channel.

I'll probably be the same with my kids-- there was a LOT of stuff in the shows we watched, Simpson's especially, where I did not get the adult humor until I became much closer to being an adult. The double entendre and sexual situational humor wasn't funny to me when I was little because I didn't recognize it. Instead I laughed at the more slapstick stuff because that's all I understood. By the time I understood the more "adult" stuff, I'd already learned it from somewhere else.

    Are you serious???
  • I was not allowed to watch Married With Children, Roseanne, Beavis and Butthead, or Jenny Jones/Jerry Springer type shows. I was allowed to watch the Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy though.

When I was a little kid, like 4-7, I was allowed to watch only one half-hour of tv a day. I always chose to watch PBS from 3:30-4:00 and thought that it was just the greatest thing. First it was "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?"  Then they changed it to "Lamb Chop's Play-Along."

I didn't realize that I was missing out until my mom married my step-dad and he wanted to watch more tv than we were used to. That's when I found out about other shows, and the bans were introduced.

  • We watched pretty much everything. Except we weren't allowed to watch Melrose Place, even though we watched 90210.
  • I wasn't allowed to watch Blossom, 90210, Melrose Place. I remember all my friends having 90210 lunch boxes and i felt soooo left out. I look back and I can understand why my parents owuldnt let me watch, but then again I dont think I turned out any diffrent lol. My parents were conservative in any way either. I used to think they were just mean lol.

  • We weren't allowed to watch any "evening cartoon" (ie simpsons, south park, ect.). Other than that we could watch mostly anything as long as our parents were watching it with us (so they could tell us when to cover our eyes)
  • My babysitter use to not let me watch Scooby Doo...yeah you heard me Scooby Doo. Who doesn't love Shaggy?
  • We weren't allowed to watch Married with Children. My mom didnt' want my brothers to watch Beavis and Butthead or The Simpsons but they usually got away with it. And no "R" rated movies unless they saw them first. LOL, I'll probably be the same way with my kids!

    MTV

Peewee's Playhouse when I was younger.  My mom thought it was stupid.

    Ditto with MTV

OHHH Peewee's Playhouse, that was so funny.  My mom actually watched it with me!

  • There was nothing on TV I wasn't allowed to watch.
  • I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons, Blossom, Roseanne, Married with Children, or any soaps. My grandma liked the Golden Girls and my mom would get really mad when my grandma would have that show on when she was baby sitting us! LOL My grandma is ultra liberal and my mom was/is conservative. I'm very conservative too so my kids won't be allowed to watch "bad" shows :)
