i am booking a surprise trip to Vegas for hubby's 30th. neither of us have ever been there and I have no idea where to start. i have been referred by many to stay at Mandalay Bay and was thinking three nights in Feb/March.

any good pointers on when to go? cheapest day for flights? websites for package deals? then of course, dining and show recomendations too

Re: Vegas

  • mr. eagles and I went to Vegas before we were married and stayed at Mandalay - it was awesome, I highly recommend.  They had an awesome pool when we were there and they just added to it.

I am not a big show person and am not interested in Cirque at all.  But mandalay did have Mamma Mia.  Oh and if you like Prince, the Boardwalk Casino bar has a Prince tribute band called Purple Reign - hysterical.

If you have time I would recommend renting a car and going out to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.

Sadly, we didn't have any amazing meals in Vegas, we picked the wrong places :(  So I would NOT go to N9NE in the Palms.  The Mexican place in Mandalay was pretty good.

Lots of people recommend going to the Bellagio but frankly, I did not see the BFD.  The fountains were cool but not worth waiting around for, IMO

    Have a great time!

  • I was a sucker for the fountains at the Bellagio - I turned into a 5yr old gaping in amazement, but I'm easily amused.  The Venetian is a good place to watch the Volcano show, and that way you can kill two birds with one stone (as both are sort of "meh").  Two other things I would recommend is dinner at "Battista's Hole in the Wall" and to make sure you check the half price ticket booths in the morning to get discounted tickets.
  • We went a few years ago in August.  It was super hot but prices are pretty good then.

We stayed at the Paris and loved it.  It's right in the middle of the strip which is helpdul.

Our favorite restaurant in NYC is Todd English's Olives, and they have one in the Bellagio. That was probably our favorite dinner we had in LV.  You can reserve a table overlooking the fountains.

Saw the Cirque show, Mystere, it's pretty cool.  There is another Cirque show called Humanity (I think) that is supposed to be crazy sexual fyi, very different than most Cirque shows.  The one O looks awesome, it's done in the water.  But I haven't seen it.
