Re: Thursday Randoms

  • I'm hating on some of the new hires at my job. Straight up HATING on them. These girls are so dumb and every interaction is like pulling teeth.

  • I wasn't familiar with this Steampunk business...now it's everywhere. I volunteer for a knitting group and we're assisting with a Steampunk festival in December. I'm not sure I understand what this whole thing is about.

I don't really 'get' it myself, but I'm seriously impressed (not joking) by the dedication people who participate have.  Someone I went to HS with participates and the dedication is impressive.

  • I had a bone density scan this morning and I guarantee you I was the youngest person they had seen for one of those in a LONG time.

I overheard the boss and the second in command screaming at one another yesterday. A coworker whispered to me "mommy and daddy are fighting!" I giggled and started trying to imagine which one would be which. Sadly, at the end of the day this fight is going to make a bigger headache for me, but I'm not dwelling on it right now.

I had to have steampunk explained to me at least 4 or 5 times. I believe that it's what people who lived in the 19th century imagined what the future would be like. Or something.

  • I have never heard of steampunk, can someone explain?

Wikipedia can: Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.[1][2] Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. It may, therefore, be described as neo-Victorian. Steampunk perhaps most recognisably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the modern authors Philip PullmanScott WesterfeldStephen Hunt and China Miéville. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airshipsanalogue computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine.

I always think of it as including lots of gears and diving bell looking devices.  So yeah, that's how I would explain steampunk.  Clearly, I don't really "get it" either.
  • I still don't get it after researching it, but now I have at least heard of it.
  • I like steampunk.  I think it's super fun - and the cosplay stuff people do with it is amazing.

Some friends and I went to Anachrocon one year, just for fun, and the costuming was gorgeous.  We spent most of the day just hanging out in the main event space admiring costumes.

  • Have you seen Disney's Treasure Island?  It was Steampunk.  Also Neil Gaiman's Stardust, that ship was totally Steampunk.
